Have it checked out immediatley. I am at 160k Miles, I just recently had to have my air pump replaced, it was rather expensive. The problem is if you do you not replace it right away there if a possibility if it blows it can cause your belts to break and to fall on your tranny and you'll have to get your car towed. Have it checked out right away man.

yeah....my car makes the exact sound and has been for 5-6 months now and the car still runs fine....I know I should have it replaced but the replacement indeed is rather expensive and I only have a part time job. I also spend carelessly so it is hard to save up...hehehe

Fan bracket

That is what i thought at first. At close inspection I found it was fan bracket and not pump. Take a closer look.

If the pump has not yet "self-destructed", you can pull it and replace the bearing. This is what usually goes on the pump and is relatively inexpensive. Have not yet done it myself but there are threads around on some of the boards.

there's a thread on this board about what size belt you would need if you take the pump out totally. I don't know if you will pass emmissions though.

There is really no need to take the pump out of the system. Besides, it is probably illegal and will result in more air pollution. The pump injects air into the exhaust system to aid in reduction of pollutants. Caught in time and the bearing replaced will solve the problem of self-destruction of the air pump.

I just bought a rebuilt air pump for my 1990 300CE and I am getting ready to swap out my old loud whinning air pump this weekend. Does anyone have a write up of how to do this? I'd assume it is as easy as loosening the belt tensioner, removing a couple of bolts to remove the old air pump, and then bolting in the new one. Any recommendations?
