Early 300e question

Hi,

I just discovered yesterday one great mistery. I have only 1 fuel pump. I have an 86 300e and its from before the change. What was the reason they changed the fuel pump setup and did they change anything else. Also which is better?

Pete

It changes all the time
About 89 they increased the opening pressure of the injectors, readilly identified by the brass color, so they added another pump. Unlike any other MB model ever produced the W124 was a continuously evolving product. There were many significant changes made between 86 and the final year.

So then what would explain that my friends 87 has a double pump design and our build dates are only months apart. I also know of the multiple changes made during and knew of the fuel pump upgrade but I believed that only european versions from year 85 received the single pump.

Also were there any major safety redesigns that should be retrofitted. I understand that the last few years had double airbags and such but it is a sophisticated system that should not be redesigned by the home mechanic.

Thanks for the answer,
Pete
