I hear you, that's how I ended up in Houston. I lived in/around LA until I was 16, then I lived in Buffalo, NY for about 9 years and then I got that "I gotta get the hell outta here" kind of feeling, so I ended up in Houston. Personally, I think it's the best place I've ever lived. Everyone's different, though. It sounds to me like you've been thinking about this, so I'm sure you'll do fine. SoCal has amazing climate, close places to snowboard, and killer beaches. The only downside is that cost of living is like 5x that of Houston.

My sister is in the real estate business. So if you want to check out a few things over here on my side. shoot me a email at chrisdpham@gmail.com and describe what you're looking for so my sister can find a few things.

A house in the ghetto here cost 250k 2b 2b...

I have a friend who lives in Allen and she a condo for 175k 3b 2b, so that's why i'm looking to move down there. I also want to buy a house with a big back yard to build a steel building so i can build my cars in the back.

Housing is stupid cheap in Texas. I live in a 1500 square foot house out in the suburbs and I paid $99,000 for it in 2002. I've seen houses similar to mine on some of those "flip this house" shows where in socal they were getting $600,000+ for it.

Like I said, I lived in socal for a long time, so I know what I'm talking about. Here's some comparisons:

Houston................................LA
Hot/humid in summer...............warm/dry in summer
cheap real estate...................crazy expensive real estate
4th largest city......................2nd largest city
super-friendly southern types...super-tolerant but more private
No C.A.R.B............................C.A.R.B *****
5,000+ restaurants.................mostly chain cookie-cutter restaurants
No In-N-Out..........................In-N-Out
Snowboarding is in CO.............Snowboarding is 45 minutes away
crappy beach.........................awesome beach
hurricanes..............................earthquake s, brush fires

other than that, they're very similar. and the parts are plentiful.

Allen is North of Dallas, so that's like 5 hours north of Houston. Houston's better. Let me know if I can help you look for real estate. I know the Houston area pretty well, and I know sometimes having local eyes and ears can help a lot.

$250,000 in Houston gets you a 4/3/3 with trees and good schools.

Thanks for the info. I have been thinking about it alot and i don't really want to live in a big city like huston. I'm already fed up with all the traffic here in L.A. Like i said I'm looking for a place where i could have a steel building in the back like a farm type of property. I was thinking of also moving towards the california desert and i do have a friend that lives in lake elsinore which has pretty big properties and a lake. I'm sure property prices will fall in the next years because it seems everyone wants to sell their house and there's not enough buyers. I need to build my credit alittle more so i can get a good low interest rate.

not to sound like the spokesman for houston or anything, but 30 minutes from downtown is all wide-open land. Look up Atascocita or Huffman. There are a lot of developments around here with acreage and no zoning laws.

I hear you with the steel building idea, I want to do the same thing.

Guys, in the next week or so, this thread will probably pass even the pic thread for # of posts.

The funny thing is, most people probably check this thread and they think to themselves, what the hell are these people going on about?!?!
