Actually if you had a 4matic it would be perfect and front wheel drive is worst in the snow..

Yeah, Your basically using the same wheels to push and steer the car and that makes the car want to go in a straight line. 4 wheel drive is perfect for the snow or gravel but if you can't get a 4matic i rather have a rwd car in the snow or rain...

Trust me, rear wheel drive is BAD in the snow. FWD or 4WD is best.

Here's why:

When wheels break friction, the want to move faster than the wheels that still have friction. So, if your FWD car spins the front wheels because of ice/snow/whatever, the front wheels want to be faster than the front, so - while traction would be better, loss of traction in the front produces less erratic movements in your direction of travel.

However, when your RWD car breaks friction, now the rear wheels want to be faster, so they start trying to pass the front wheels. Since your car is not going to compress, the wheels move to one side or the other. Now you're spinning.

Spinning=BAD

I hope that clears this up.

God, I feel like Mr. Frickin' Wizard today.

ive had a lot more trouble in rwd than 4wd in the snow/rain. it snowed like 2 feet in 1 day last winter and i was pretty much sideways the entire time. i took out a fwd car and had no problem

I trained myself to get used to RWD in the snow... I took it out into empty parking lots and just tossed it around until I got a feel for it. Granted, Id love TCS or AWD like a skyline (mmm) but its not there, and with the Champiro snows I had on, it wasnt too big a deal.

Well, i see we all have different opinions on fwd or rwd...I live in socal so i don't have alot of experiance in the snow but in the rain i would always drive a rwd car, i've been in a fwd when it started to hydroplane and i couldn't steer the car or use the brakes because there was just no response. When i drive my benz in the rain i can steer and push the car at the same time with the rear wheels and gain more control. If you don't have the right tires in the snow or rain i don't think it really matters if it's fwd or rwd..

well, they both have problems; fwd has understeer and rwd oversteers... you take a turn in teh right conditions with front wheel drive, your gonna continue moving forwards. try it with rear wheel drive and the back of your car may swing around to towards the direction of the turn

I think we're both right, just in different ways. I've heard something about how pushing with rear wheels helps in certain handling conditions. Trust me though, if you're in snow, RWD is the worst.

I just reread your post and I see what you're talking about. Hydroplaning causes all of the wheels to lose traction, then I suppose RWD to regain control makes sense. However, when you're talking about driving in snow,` it's a whole different story. Driving in snow with a powerful RWD car is definitely tough because the rear wheels break traction so easily.

You see what I mean?

I think we're both right.

Yup, Too much power on a RWD car that loses traction will make for nasty tailwhip. I once try to smoke the tires on my mustang and the thing went sideways...

look at this video from the gumball...that viper tried to chrip the rear wheels but lost control..

Dear god get the 190e if its the 16valve one! My dad talks constantly about how amazingly fun they are to drive. Apparantly he had one in 5spd manual and wants to replace my 300ce with it. I said fine, so long as he allows me to get the evolution II bodykit I found for it
