DIY on replacing rear view mirrors
STEP 1
Remove the covers inside the door with a wide-tip flat head screwdriver. Pop the peg out near the top (where the screwdriver is in the pic) and then pull towards you and up.

Here's what the back of the cover looks like (driver's side). The only difference between the two sides is the passenger side has an extra peg near the bottom front.
Now that I'm looking at the pics, the second peg on the driver's side cover may just be broken off(?)
STEP 2
Unplug the wires that power the mirror.
Unscrew the three screws that hold the mirror to the door (circled in red)
On the passenger side, you'll have to unscrew the wiring with a small Phillip's head (circled in orange)
The hole for the second peg is what the red arrow is pointing to.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
I know this is a fairly simple job, but if we all document the repairs we do, then everyone can benefit.

BTW thanks for the write up..
mgw, i have power passenger side mirror but manual driver's side, is the replacement the same as what you've done or is it different? Also i've always been curious, is it possible to swich out the mirrors, i.e. make them both the same size, vs. the stock ones which are two different sizes, i don't like how the car looks uneven with the small size one and the larger one...

By the way... right hand drive w124 have the shorter wider mirror on the right and I would imagine it would fit, as long as you're not worried about missing the convex glass on your passenger side.
I don't know what the cover on the inside looks like, but the three screws are the same on the power and the manual mirrors.
