Since OEM fans costs $110 to $190, I'm thinking of adapting an aftermarket "S" type high flow fan.

ummm, my fans have gone bad on me a couple of times. The first was due to aging, the second of a stupid grocery bag getting sucked in somehow.
Anyways, my dad said they can be repaired. I know they cannot be opened from the housing, but if you look in there, you will spot a "switch" that is thermal-activated. It damages on excessive heat. He just dropped solder on it till it was completing the circuit.
Now, in this country there are three types of Mercedes parts, the Genuine, the German duplicate (Made in Germany) and the third is Made in Taiwan Piece of *****. Try to repair the Genuines as the others will cause a vibration in the car that is annoying and you will feel like a Jap car in which you can tell if the engine is still running or not. The aftermarkets are not so... vibration-free.

HEY!
I just saw that FAN ON EBAY. My mom's E230 has that one installed here. I love it. Its noisy as HELL, but keeps the car super cool. Good thing if you live in Mojave or Death Valley.
Falconeer.
