changing spring pads

How much labor is involved in changing out the spring pads? Do the springs and shocks have to come out? As you can see my 911 has been lowered...need to work on the benz.

Thanks.

Not that much labor at all is required to remove the spring pads. The front, you can simply just tilt the wheel all the way to the left or right until the spring is open to work on. Simply jack the car up and compress the spring.

Make sure you have the right spring compressor as well or you'll find it rather challenging.

The rear is a bit more tricky. For some people, You need to drop the lower mount and there is one large bolt that needs to be removed.

I'll be removing my spring pads on my car as well since the suspension on my 300E (Bilstein Sports and Vogtland Springs) are being questioned whether they will work.

Good Luck!

Chris, I like the Vogtlands in my 400E just fine - VERY nice ride. Trick is gotta shim that front up a lot, though. We're talking an 18mm pad sitting on top of another 18 mm pad cut down as a spacer. Now my car is level. When I didn't shim up the front it looked wicked but the shock was too compressed = harder ride.

As you know Vogtland sells the same springs for the 300E and the 400E.

Now that I'm done with my spring pads I'll be selling my spring compressor soon : )

Hey,

Can you post any pictures of how you did the process or how it looks? I'm very curious about this and still confused about how it's done. I don't know the MM sizes of spring pads. only the bump number. i.e.: 1-5

Chris,

How would 1 bump spring pads looks with the stock suspension? Here's my dilemma. My 911 is obviously my sporting car and I'd like to retain my e320s as my "comfy" daily drivers so I'm shying away from doing a full suspension overhaul. However both my cars have the thickest pads so I have that 4x4 look. Changing to the thinnest pad should give 16mm of lowering, which is pretty significant.

My other consideration is to spend 1300 for the full sportline suspension. However, since I'm really just going for a cosmetic change, I'm not sure its really worth the investment. To me the ride height of the old 500e is ideal.

Chris, you mean you want me to take my springs off again?

(Grumble, mutter, grumble)

Didn't have time to do it today. I think I'll have time (and the weather) to do it tomorrow. (I have to take it apart - again- anyways as I've thought of a modification to do).

Hopefully will post pics later tomorrow.

i have 2-bump pads all around, and i park next to another 124 in my apartment complex. his car is MUCH higher than mine, the 2 bump pads make a huge difference, i think going to 1 will dramatically lower your car, at least compared to what you're rolling with now... one or two people have removed the pad altogether. they don't cost much, and are a lot cheaper than buying springs, so i would just try it and see what it looks/feels like

300ce springs vs stock

What is the difference going to be if I put the 300ce springs on my 300 e? I hope to lower it and stiffen the ride and was wondering if that would do it? Also where can I purchace spring compressors at and what knock to my pocket book should I expect for a tool I will only use once ir twice. Thanks guys for your patience with my questions

I would have loved to man, but unfortunately i've lowered the car aready... i need to put in a 4 bump in the front and maybe cut the 2 bump and try to put that in there too, because the front is so low that the wheels are tucking...

i don't think there's a standard size that came with all cars, it depends a lot on what the original owner wanted when they bought the car, i think...

umm... you're going to need to change your stock spring pads no matter what with the bilstein and vogtlands. when I dropped mine before putting wheels and etc ... the front was slammed and I had no finger gap whatsoever...

I was using 5 in the front and 3 in the rear. Although I really wanted to go 2 in the rear to lower it a little bit and even things out but I never got the chance.
