Torque Converter

I am installing a transmissoin on my 86 300E. I've got the engine and tranny out. Plan on changing all the gaskets and cleaning up the engine. Anyone know about removing the torque converter? I'd like to replace it while everything is easily accessible. Having difficulty getting off.

Thanks

its bolted on. There is a round plate on the back of the engine held on with tiny screws exactly opposite to the starter. Turn the engine over a third and find 2 screws holding it on, turn it again a third. There are 3 sets of 2 screws. Prying wont help any, I tried that for hours too.

If you have removed the 6 TC retaining bolts and still having difficulty getting it off .. that will be because the TC has a centre spigot that is a close fit into the flywheel centre....over the years the 'close fit' becomes a 'tight' fit due to rust/corrosion and will therefore require you to gently lever the TC off the flywheel (have another pair of hands to support the TC whilst you use two levers to 'rock' it loose).

luv2drive,
My opinion is that if a member posts a problem on a public forum such as this and as a result receives helpful/useful advice then it is common courtesy to at least acknowledge any helpful replies.
Regards.

I guess 5 months is a pretty poor response time huh? - I apologize.
I won't list my excuses - you are correct

Needless to say I have not accomplished much on my project - Higher priorities keep popping up and sucking the money away....Good thing the old benz is not needed immediately.

But I do thank you all for your advice. Alphonsohall you were not kidding about the "tight fit." It took some pursuasion but got it off. Now slowly working on pulling the crankshaft out.

Thanks again. I will be sure to reply promptly from now on.
