cold starts

I recently changed my oil from regular dino 20/40...To mobil one full synth 10/30 I also added lucus oil treatment full syth.Well it seems that now when I start the car it sounds as though theres is a stuck valve or something until she warms up.All of that clicky clank is driving me up a wall. I hate to dump the oil after all the money I just put in.But if you guys think the oil is too thin Ill do it.

from what I'm thinking, it could just be that you have sticky valves? and therefor, as a result of adding thicker oil to the car for the colder weather that has come/is comming, maybe it is accentuating a problem that might have been there but wasn't noticeable.

i'm by no means a mechanic nor do I really have any understanding of mechanics of the cars, but that is just what my logic leads me to think..

anyone know?

So it seems the ticking noise at startup is normal? Mine always makes that sound for a 30 seconds or so, then resolves itself. I also figured it was a lack of lubrication to the valves on startup, but apparantly its the oil check valve?? Anyone with more 411 on this??

i was going to say that the valves in 124s are hydraulically adjusted (with liquid, in this case, oil.) and that the tapping is just the tappets being pressurised at stratup. but that link pretty much explains what ive just said.

oil weights

Have you checked Mobil 1 site for rec's on oil weights? 10w-30 is not reccomended. They suggest 0w-30 and I would guess it is because of the very tight tolerances in a mercedes engine. The oil needs to be very thin at startup to provide proper lubrication. I would at least use 5w-30 and i say this because it is sometimes easier to find than the 0w-30. I buy mine at WalMart for about $22.60 for a 5 qt container. I notice that evan at 6,000 miles the oil is still VERY clean.
Good luck!
kurt
