W124 Water Pump

I think my 260E needs a new water pump and/or thermostat and I was wondering if anybody had dealt with this already. How do I know and what did you pay for the part/ labor?

Cooling issues

Both my water pump & thermostat went bad on my 300E. My water pump had visible signs of leaking coolant. If you have some mechanical abilities and access to the web, you could do the job in a weekend and save on labor. There are some web sites that sell OEM Mercedes parts and the prices aren't too bad. Water pump cost me about $160 and Thermostat kit cost about $24. Replacing the thermostat took about an hour. The water pump was a slight pain in the ..., but took about half a day.
Oh, I forgot. I still had over heating issues. It turned out to be my clutch fan. That too, took about a half a day and cost about $150.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, easy job.

easy, easy, easy.

The hardest part is messing with the coolant. (hence the easy x3)

Easier than removing a tranny, maybe Two easy's. I had to do mine on my 3.0 this last spring. Driving home for the weekend, got over the pass, through seattle, and as I got off I-5 I heard this terrible squeek/grinding noise, I thought it was a POS K-Car next to me lol , but the sound persisted after I passed him. Pulled into my buddies house 5 blocks later and opened the hood to find bits of the bearings everywhere and the pulley had nearly fallen off. I have never seen an mbz pump do this. I guess it would have been easier if I hadn't have had to wait for the part for a weeek and then replace it outside in his front yard. Damned if I'll let anyone work on my car when I can do it myself.

Water pump

I paid my repair shop to replace my water pump. It was the middle of winter, I didn't have a garage or a spare car, so I bit the bullet. They replaced the water pump, flushed the system and replaced all the hoses. It think I ended up paying around $800. I thought that you have to remove the power steering pump to get the water pump off, Is that not true? Thermostat is the easiest thing in the world to replace. Three screws, swap, you're done.
