Flowmaster Exhaust

Anybody know if I can hook up a flowmaster muffler to my pipes and just add some tips? Or are those only for trucks? I just missed out on getting a sweet Lorinser exhaust off of ebay. Goddammit.

-Actually what I'm asking is how much variation is there between sport exhaust flow? There are some really cheap mufflers that look identical to the remus and cost about $100 and are made of steel and look decent. I'm sure quality isn't nearly the same, but would I get the same 8-10 HP boost? Anybody have a universal fit muffler on their car? or a jury-rigged flowmaster system like I was thinking of?

Inlet tubes

Does anybody know how big the inlet tubes are on the 300es? The magnaflows i've been looking at have 2.25" diameter inlets. Does that sound right? How exact does it have to be?

You'll get some gains from going for a full exhaust overhaul but just replacing the muffler won't do it.

High Flow Cats
Resonator Delete
High Flow Muffler

Also consider wider exhaust piping.

What does the resonator delete do? Actually that just means taking the resonator out, right? Is magnaflow stuff fine for a high flow cat too? If i pay $80 for a magnaflow high flow cat, 120-150 for a magnaflow muffler, what shop costs am i looking at?

go magnaflow, trust me. There are many different types of magnaflows you can get, I have a cat back system deleting the center muffler with a rear magnaflow 2.5" with two 2" outlets. Deleting the center muffler reduces weight and exhuast restriction as well as alowing more sound to resonate through the muffler. I had a cat back system made for my TE for just under $400, well worth it.

Stick your head under your car and take a look. Depeding on the model, you have precats soon after the exhaust manifold, then you have the secondary or primary cats under the driver/passenger area, then under the rear seat you have a center muffler or resonator, then it goes to the final rear muffler.

If you haven't noticed, these cars have TONS of sound deadening material etc in them compared to a honda. More mufflers mean a quieter car.

thats funny! i never noticed that. seriously, that is some serious muffler action going. talking about a free-flowing exhaust system- yea right!

hell man, my first car i owened, and still have is a 1970 Camaro... i love the sound of a V8! i mayy have to see about making some 'modifications' to the exhaust. hell, if anything, its gotta ease up on some back pressure!

Yeah, Rik's set up is very clean and everyone should follow that set up when they get their exhaust done.

Same guy who did my cat back Magnaflow on my TE did a Flowmaster on my E400. That car sounded amaazing! Flowmaster had a little more rasp than the magnaflow, but damn did it sound sweet on that 32 valve v8. A must for any m119 owner.

Did you provide the magnaflow parts or did you buy them from the exhaust place?

I didn't realize that the oem muffler was mounted so far away from the bumper assembly... There is quite a lot of space before you actually can see the tips on your 500e. Do I have to get a muffler set up like that or could a standard universal muffler with tips already on be added? I'm trying to stay well below $650. I was going to buy a high-flow cat off of ebay and a muffler too and just existing piping with maybe one new section to extend to the new muffler.. Do you think that would work?

That original lorinser muffler went on ebay for $131. $165 shipped. what a joke. that thing must've cost like 800 new. I can't believe I screwed that up.

Well, for me, the problem with suppling my own parts is that the shop in turn, charges more for labor, so its a wash for the most part.

The way the rear muffler sits, using a universal muffler with tips already installed, would require you mount the rear muffler really low, this is the case on a 500e, this varies from model to model. On my 190, I used a universal muffler w/tips and notched the rear bumper so it would sit up where it should.

I had dan fast in bellevue washington completely
redo the exhaust on my 93 500e and they did a fantastic job.
the system previously on the car was a 3 inch deal with a resonator.
It was way too loud. Dan fast added a resonator and a magnaflow
muffler. Now it sounds like a 500e should. Somewhat lowkey in normal
driving with a subdued growl until you floor it.
I'm going to take my 94 E420 to them to redo the exhaust.
IMO a magnaflow or flowmaster custom system is the best
bang for the buck.

Pictures of your 500E set up and when you get your E420 set up done can you snap some pictures for me? I plan to do it to my E420 as well.

any loss in performance? with a more freeflowing exhaust, have you notice any loss in low end torque? any improvement in gas mileage?

I noticed very little power change, if anything a little more kick in my 400E, I did see a great improvement in mileage, I was up to 25-26mpg on the hwy. Running royal purple in the rear diff, and mobil 1 in the engine.

A free flow exhaust will never lose you power. The larger pipe in conjunction with no resonator, higher flowing cat and free flowing rear muffler, should net some ponies on the dyno, probably not allot. The seat of the pants meter says big improvement, but since I have no before dyno run, I can't do a A/B comparison.
