thanks for sharing the pics

What a treat to see those pics! I sure wish MB could get more of their cars into the US, I know, it's not the fault of MB, it's the US. I was just in India and the VERY basic cars that they sell are so cheap, but the work for the country they are sold in, one reason is MUCH slower speeds. Whenever I travel I try and find a local MB dealer and grab a few sales pieces. Always makes for fun reading on the plane trip home.
Thanks again for sharing.

great pics , since I travel to Italia (for family visits) often, I get the chance to rent/see all the nice cars that are not loaded up with options...its great to have the CHOICE of cloth seats, manual A/C, no sunroof, 1.4,1.6,1.7,1.8,2.0.ect,ect,ect engines, auto or manual, asr-no asr, you get the idea....in the early 90's, i came across a BMW catalog...power windows? just the fronts or all 4?, power seat, drivers or both/with or without memory?, cig lighter?, 8 color interiors in cloth, 5 in vinyl, 4 in leather....dont want cruise?- no prob... jeez so many choices....I like to rent from SIXT because they have a great selection of MB's and have a all-in-one price including VAT, full insuance, airport taxes, ect....(holiday cars) and they will usually upgrade a cars if they have one that has been sitting awhile, got a E320 CDI 5speed for the A-classe 170CDI price....anyway, enjoyed the photo tour---

Here are a few pics of the E220 16V Diesel elegance that will be delivered to us next saturday...
Looks beautiful! I was thinking of getting one like that, I want to save money on fuel, but I don't really want a diesel.
Do you in your country get a problem like we in Russia get, alot of used W210 220D coming in to the country are german taxies, usually repainted to cover it up? Do you have the VIN number, to check that?

Yes that is a cloth interior, the standard here in Europe.
Mine is not a former taxi, it has 208,000 certified km's. There's this annual registration when the car is inspected and certified for minimal road safety. Furthermore a taxi would have run about 500.000km's by now, they all have a manual transmission, vinyl interior, 'classic' trim with steel rims and plastic wheelcovers, and you would find holes drilled into the dashboard and fender(s) where the taximetre and extra antenna's would have been...

The 210 does look good. One question [danger: math involved!!!].

How much actual savings do expect to get once you factor in the added cost of the newer car [differential in 210-124] and any additional insurance and taxes that I would assume a newer/more expensive car would incur?

Reason for my question. At one point I looked at trading in my wife's commuter [124 Sportline] for a 300D [W210] but after calculating the cost of the trade for the newer car [a 1992 to a 1997], higher insurance and higher property taxes I found that she would have to drive 45000 miles a year for 4.5 years to break even over just paying for extra gas for the W124 [300E 3.0]. There would be no "savings" until 180,000 miles of driving.

We drive 30,000km a year and the investment will break even after 2 years while planning to keep the W210 for at least 5 years. Insurance is slightly cheaper, road taxes are higher for a diesel but this will be overcompensated for with the cheaper fuel price and better mileage...

You could have still picked up a 300TD wagon and swaped over your exhaust and other things you've done to your car.

Believe me I looked around for awhile for a 300TD/TDTurbo but they're all dirty worn out cars (oil leakage/ruptured seats/bad bodywork/not all options on the car working/etc.etc.) with super high mileage. NONE can be found in a comparable state with my 300TE. Also road taxes overhere are based on the weight of the car and a 300TD(Turbo) is even heavier than the TE. Fuel economy would be worse, big old 6 cylinder diesel compared to a multivalve small block diesel in the W210 and together this would make things break even after 4 or 5 years...

Your 220 is going to be great! Enjoy it! Do the w210's have rust issues like they do over here? Fenders, hoods, spring perches?

The dealer told me that on the W210 the control arms/bushings are weak and will have to be done every few years. Sometimes the spring perches rust away, but they already have routine in solving that. They cut away the old one and weld on a new perch. I checked my W210's bodywork for rust especially inside and along the wheel arches and everywhere around the trunk. You sometimes see them with the trunk-keylock almost falling out! (This seems to be worse on wagons!?) btw both W124's I've owned had front fenders rusting in the front part right behind the corners above the wheel arches...

sorry lancelot this seems to be off topic
but i'm curious how did the a/c panel looks like in your TE?
do you have the 'turning knobs' type or the 'digital' (is it? ) type like in the US?
do you know what i'm talking about?
sorry if this is a silly question

btw, your TE is the best
but good luck with the new car
and don't forget to keep hanging with us here

92 300TE 4Matic
TE 4 matic mileage

My 92 300 TE 4Matic (103 engine) gets 17.5 miles per gallon(US) highway.
Not great but I still think the overall cost of ownership is not bad for its size and utility.

I wish more people would read stuff like this. We Americans are such whining babies. Fuel is at $2.35 a gallon here and I still hear idiots complaining about the cost of fuel. Some of the suppliers in my business are now tacking on Fuel Surcharges due to the "increased cost of transportation".

$2.35 a gallon; shut up and enjoy it.
