Fault reading / clearing equipment for 300e?

I couldn't find anything that would explain how (where) to find some diagnostic equipment that would (hopefully) allow me to check the functioning of the engine mgmt system. All I have access to is OBD2 stuff but my car is an old w124 1991 300E 2.6 auto
So does my car store fault codes and how can I read them?
Thanks in advance!

I believe it's a little panel thing beside the battery. Black, square, and alot of numbers. I think that's it? Mine has one right there.
