I don't know why, but a pancake seemed to fit the mood.

These are all the tools that are needed to have a very fun night out on the town. Though this entire setup costs quite the penny, it is sooooo worth it when you are wanting to do any sort of high speed runs. All this equipment helps you and allows you to be the lead car of your group. I use most of this here and is just fantastic. Also, get yourself a nice nav system. they help when you need to get away from an area quickly.

Valentine 1 Radar/Laser Detector
Its range and accuracy are consistently ranked #1, it is hardware upgradable, and perhaps more importantly, it is the only unit with a directional display.

Bel 990 Radar Detector
This was purchased because the V1 doesn't cover all of the frequencies used by police forces across Western Europe. Although detection range may be slightly better than the V1, its lack of a directional display renders it useful only for detecting signals not picked up by the superior V1.

Escort ZR3 Laser Detector/Jammer
Although there are few reliable units available Laser Jammers (Bel, Blinder, Lidatek), only the Escort covers the majority of laser frequencies in use in both the United States and Europe. The ZR3 also benefits from Escorts vaunted reliability, inconspicuous jammer units and an easy to read display.

Super Specterguard Plate Covers
The only solution of its kind that I know of, and far more effective than spray-on solutions. Illegal in several US states and most of Europe, this blocks plate numbers at angles more than 15 degrees off-axis. Very effective against cameras.

Note 50% blockage of plate numbers

Uniden BC796D Digital Scanner
Like the V1, I'm not sure why (or even how) anyone uses anything else. Street racing requires a scanner that can pick up both analog and digital police bands, and the BC796D's 1000 channels just barely cover a cross-country run. A large display, simple controls and a decent speaker make for an excellent unit.

Uniden PRO520XL CB Radio
A critical item, the 520XL (<$100) was a terrific unit when paired with a decent trunk-mounted aerial. Small enough to be mounted in the benz, the 520XL's internal speaker is just loud enough to hear clearly even at high speed.

All of them!
I own three V1's and three Blinder M40's and recommend only them. I own that particular Uniden C.B. and a magnet mount, a K40 antenna and Uniden beartracker for very long highway trips. No regrets!
Owned a Bel, after several months I threw it in the trash. Waste of coin! I've owned all kinds of equipment including fuzzbuster (remember that?), and a Spectrum remote. The best previous detectors I owned were the Escort and the Passport, both manufactured by Cincinati Microwave before they renamed the company "Escort" and the two partners split with escort then making cheap plastic housing detectors.
Mike Valentine opened Valentine Research and makes one thing. IMO the best and best supported detector which is what his previous company did as well.
I was hit tonight with radar with a cop sitting on a back road at the bottom of a long steep hill. i picked him up at about a mile with my oldest V1 (it's about 7 years old) and dropped 20 mph (speed check). He was hiding with the lights off and the BMW 7 coming down the hill fast on the other side of the cop benefited as I flashed him the highs a couple times. He slammed the brakes as I went by and then I heard the V1 and it's rear arrow lit up. Then I heard it a second time from the rear. Unfortunately the next guy flying up behind me had the cop pulling him over just as he crested the hill behind me, about 3/4 of a mile back.
I know one guy who has had the 8500 and V1 and doesn't regret not using the 8500 anymore. I haven't met any V1 owner who has every said they think the V1 is garbage. It is a tool, and the best one I know of. I wouldn't leave home without it. It doesn't make you immune, but a V1 is what I would chose if I were to have only 1 piece of equipment.
My 2 cents
Rich

V1 is the only one I've used and I appreciate the directional arrows. My friend has the 8500 and is inferior in my opinion based on personal experience driving the same routes; more false hits. The V1 has saved me many times and I like the V1. Also, the V1 feels far superior in construction. The 8500 looks like a cheaply constructed electronic device.

I have been stopped twice in the past six months for speeding, and with the V1 in clear view, have received two warnings and no tickets.

the problem with some radar detectors(dont ask which cause i dont know) is youll get false hits, like for example my dads radar detector would always go off near banks and stuff with high security, becasue the sensor picked up the security system's motion sensor's etc. which is why it will most likely go off in your in like an airport or a tollbooth

Most radar detectors have also a highway and city mode... Remember to use them as for instance using highway in the city will make it go off non stop.
