e320

i have recently joined the forums with the intent to learn about the e300 models from 1996-1999. i was looking around and want to also learn about slightly older models too (example 1994 e320). how does this gas version perform? gas mileage? handling? comfort? i know safety is top notch. would you recomend this like the diesel was recomended to me... i will soon have a 75-80 commute to work (each way).

are there any "known" or "common" problems?
cost of rebuilds, engine and trans? generally what mileage are they usually needed?

what is the "going rate" for this car with approx 107,000 miles?
link: http://ditmire.com/sys/display.cgi?detail=4439
thanks so much.

For concrete information regarding E300 MY 96-1999 I would suggest you check out the W210 section of MB world.

a TVR Cerbera Speed Twelve
highly recommended. Just make sure the one you choose has the wiring harness already changed.

1994 E320 - 3.2L M104

oil leaks (timing chain cover, headgasket, rear main seal)

trans - check for bad/worn seals

wiring harness (prone to failure unless previously replaced) These get brittle, old, fall apart and cause all sorts of electrical nightmares.

If that's your daily commute, that's alot of miles I would recommend you getting a daily beater instead of a MB regardless year. Maintenance can get pretty expensive for MB's, just because it's older doesn't mean the repairs are going to be any cheaper, go with a Japanese import for cheap reliability.

I could not agree more....thats alot of miles I would get something that would be more reliable and cheaper to maintain.....You probly would want to use synthetic oil to get more mile in between changes.Synthetic is not recommended in our cars.

As a commuter you might want to consider the 1995 E300 Diesel model.

First, there's a difference between switching to synthetic being a bad idea and "synthetic oil is not recommended for our cars". I use Mobil 1 5w30 in my car - no leaks. The only leak I ever had was my head gasket and rear main seal which were leaking with conventional oil anyway. Once I had those fixed, my car doesn't leak at all. So my verdict is that synthetic caused ZERO leaks in my car. I think that a lot of people hear that synthetic can cause leaks because synthetic oil will soften your seals. If your crusty seals are the only reason your car isn't leaking, then I suppose you could experience leaks, but I haven't. I used synthetic in my mk1 rabbit and it never leaked a drop either. Honestly, I think the whole "synthetics cause leaks" is a bit exaggerated.

Second, I think a lot of people, myself included, are getting awfully tired of your thread **** antics and insulting way of trying to put people in their place when you feel they should "search first". I think that we all liked you much better when you were light-hearted, funny Zorro, rather than patronizing, ball-busting Zorro.

Mark, I think you're a good guy and you contribute a lot to this forum, but lately you're kinda being a tool and it's getting old.

W124's
Much respect to you and everything Mark but I agree with what Matt said.

You may have a nice W124 and "know" what you're talking about with it comes to these cars but you do tend to go over board thinking you're a king when it comes down to everything.

Like I said - it's something I've noticed and I don't think of any less about you (not like you care anyways since you're a big time ballin' actor).

It's all good though cause I honestly hate MBWorld now since is why I post elsewhere and not here anymore.

me neither..

anyway, if you're looking for a commuter car, i too would go with a japanese one, since they cost a lot less to maintain, maybe a nice rl or tl, or es300. otherwise, the diesel w124's seem to run forever, there's one lady who drives one at work, it has close to 350k miles on it and she doesn't maintain it for *****, but it runs pretty damn well!

there are just a handful of people who post regularly in this forum, and it seems like none can get along with each other. now this gentleman starts a thread hoping to possibly share the enjoyment of owning one of these cars, and this is how it ends up. how embarassing for us! he's probably halfway to the nearest honda dealership by now.
anyway, one by one all of you will become frustrated and stop posting here, and i will eventually reign supreme. excellent... eeeeeexcellent...

ps apologize to the thread originator and give him some advice!
