Cool M119 engine Number

I need to replace my water pump and thermostat, when i look for parts they want to know which number range my vehicle engine fits into (12020771 or 120772). How do I find this out? '92 400E. I called a Mercedes dealer but he said he only uses the VIN and could not tell what engine (He wanted my business)

I assume its the first. Mercedes went from an open to closed block design in the 93(?) model year. Otherwise I don't know of any distinctions between the early and later engines (asides from slight HP differences).

benzbin asks the same question. The engine change happened in 1992. so you have the choice early or later. is there no way to find the number from one of the many plates on the car?

There's a plaque on the engine block.
