Acceleration hesitation

I'm having a problem (actually had it for the whole sommer) when I am in motion and it feels like the car is just giving up on me. Here it is-

If I accelerate a little harder than normal (like flooring it), I have a hesitation problem. When I go from 1-2 it's OK, but in 2nd at around 40mph, it feels like a governor kicks in and it stays in 2nd gear but takes longer to accelerate, then "restores power" at around 50mph, right before it switches into 3. Now when I repeat this test and I use the gear selector to go to 2nd, it does not have this problem. Something to do with the tranny?

Thanks for your help in advance!
