Are these transmissions interchangeable?

Lucky me, I have joined the group of members you have had our reverse gears bite the dust. Are ’93 transmissions interchangeable with ‘94-’95 tranny’s? All three years have the M104 engine, so my thinking is that they are. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks.

yes, for sure they are.

however, there may be some differences, as some of the later ones had the E and S button/ slide thingamjig. that might entail having some kind of control box for the transmission.

Did it just go out all at once or was it a gradual thing? How did the fluid look? Any more info? I want to unload mine before that happens. I am not wanting to spend $1200 on this car for a transmission.

Thanks!

It happened all at once really. The day before it died, I put it in reverse and left off the brake to back out of the garage but it didn't move. I put it pack in back in park then back to reverse, and all way well. I didn't think much of it as I need to replace my linkage bushings so I just thought that the shift lever had not engaged reverse.

The next day was very hot outside and I got stuck in one of Atlanta's wonderful traffic jams. The outside temp display peaked at 105 as I sat in traffic. After the traffic jam I stopped somewhere for about twenty minutes. When I came back to the car it would not go in reverse, it felt like reverse engaged but it wouldn't back up.

So I think that it had been very close to failing for awhile. Sitting on that very hot Atlanta interstate for over an hour did it in.

The fluid was nice and red, at the right level, had no strange odor and the only advance warning was the day before.

154,000. I'm still driving it though. It still shifts great in all forward gears. I have the tranny that I am swapping it with, now I just need a free weekend. I hope to do the swap this weekend.
