w124 200E Choppy Ride after Gearbox change

Hi guys, I just stumble upon this site and this site rocks. All hail the W124 E-Class Picture thread.

Anyways, I've just change a gearbox to my 200E Auto. The old was wrecked because there were no more auto fluid inside it. I bought a second hand gearbox from a reliable chopshop and the mechanic did the job and everything turns out nice but the transmission sucks.
Everytime the RPM goes up to 3k-3.5k and when the gear changes, theres a 'KICK' from gear 2-3.
When the RPM goes to 3.5k-4k, I have to release the Acc pedal and then the gear only changes from 3 to 4 when the RPM drops to around 3k.

Please advice what I should see into. Its getting very irritating because the transmission is not smooth at all. And I would appreciate any advice how to make the reknown 200E sluggish Acceleration to be more responsive.

Thanks

The Bowden cable needs to be adjusted IN for earlier shift. Modulator needs to be adjusted CLOCKWISE for firmer shift which will eliminate slippage. Do the Bowden cable first, it's easier.

I would say take it back to the shop but if they are stupid enough to let the car go out in that condition then they probably don't know know to adjust it.

I check the same thing from another forum called mercedesclub.org
I learnt something called flaring and its quoted as :

"Flaring is where the revs go up in between the changes, normally because the change is taking too long, when the change is quick, the revs do not get a chance to rise"
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/sh...ad.php?t=28309

I must be facing this problem. Any suggestion to fix this? Is this the engine problem or the gearbox or simply the settings?
I'm a newbie but does the ECU has any to do with these?

vacuum modulator on the tranny could make it shift faster

The vacuum modulator actually controls shift firmness by the way of increasing or decreasing working pressure. The bowden cable controls shift timing. I am not sure if this is what you meant. Faster=harder?

ok thx...

The vacuum modulator and the bowden cable and the tranny...

ok where are those in the engine compartment? I'm in Malaysia and the mechanics here normally speak cantonese unless i can show them any picture of these.

I've only seen them adjusting 'something' with a screw driver at the engine where they suppress a spring that revs up the engine eg like pedalling the accelerator. im so confused. Do u guys think buying the W124 mechanic's book at any bookstore help?

A bit off-topic. But, Malaysia + Cantonese?!
Malaysia is usually Malay (whatever their language is) and Chinese, no?
I'm from Hong Kong and we speak Cantonese. It would surprise me if Malaysians speak Canto too!

oh, its probably you havent been to malaysia or have any malaysian friends.
Malaysia is a multiracial country and we have Malays, Chinese and Indians as well as the aboriginals here.
The Chinese people here usually speaks quite a number of languages. I speak Malay, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Some even speak more like Hakka and Hokkien dialects.
Well, now you have one Malaysia Chinese friend who has a W124 and loves it.

LOL Cheers for the explanation!
My flatmate is Malaysian. He speaks Canto too. I think it would be fair for me to say that one of my first languages was Canto, but I honestly cannot understand a word of Canto from my flatmate.
In Mandarin, he's much better.

The cable in the middle is what the mechanic adjust. The correct tension will results smoother shifts in gear. Too tense will delay shifts at higher RPM, too loose will cause premature shift. Thats what he told me
