Question fuel pumps 88 300E

please advise where the fuel pumps are located on a 300E and how do I get to them? The engine dies while driving, sometimes two or three times in one day, then it may go for a week or two before happening again. I checked the fuel pump regulator, and the car was recently tuned up, also had fuel filter replaced. Any ides would be appreciated. Could it be the fuel pumps?

fuel pump is under the rear passenger side hidden behind a panel.

Fuel Pumps

Fuel pumps are located under an access panel underneath the car by the rear passenger side.

My 91 300E has the dual pumps which are all part of the pump asembly (Filter, pumps and acumulater). It is easily removed for service. I picked up a complete assembly for $100 at a local scrap yard.

Your model may only have 1 pump in the assembly.

For some reason this cover was difficult to see on my car. It kind of blends in. I thinks there are about 5 small bolts that you will need a socket with extension, or a metric nutdriver to remove. On mine, I touched the fuel line and it sprang a leak because it was so brittle with age. I don't recommend doing this right before you are planning to drive somewhere, in case yours is in the same condition.

I wouldn't suspect the fuel pumps for flying stalls. It could be the fuel pump relay, or another relay. It could be lot of things. I find that with problems like this I usually have to wait until I'm stranded to find the cause. It's like chasing a ghost.

Question fuel pump 300e

Thanks shdoug, it is very much like chasing a ghost. This little 300e has been doing this for over a year. Some MB shops tell me that they can do nothing unless it fails. And it only fails intermitinly when it wants to. the car seems to have a mind of its own.

When does it stall, at idle or at speed? Does it idle smoothly at all times? Any other symptoms?

Wink

Thanks for the info Red, I will try the scrap yard. I know a dealership would charge more for the part than the blue book value of the car lol.
