Crank Sensor

I have a feeling my crank sensor may be causing all my problems. What would happen if i unplugged it and tried to start the car and run it for a little while. (could i cause any damage?)

There is only one flaw I can see in your plan. The car will not start without a crankshaft hall sensor. Perhaps you should tell us your problem for us to possibly help you.

You just let it idle for 15 minutes, or 15 minutes of driving? Will it start right up after it kills? Does it crank for a while then eventually start up?

He said it does this:

Ok heres the deal it will run fine start up fine until runnign temp than it will just turn off. EVERY TIME it will turn off. 9/10 times it will start back up and run for 2 ro 3 minutes than completely die. Than it will crank but no start."

It sounds like a failing electronic part, to me. I think the crank sensor may be it. I've heard they fail when they warm up when they are starting to go bad. They only way to be sure without investing in testing equipment is to replace it and find out. But I would think it would set a code on the computer for sure.

Does your have the On-board Diagnostic interface? (OBD) I don't know if they did that on the M103 engines. Actually, yours should have the M104 engine I think.

It would be under the hood, driver side engine bay, under the fuse box cover. A round 36 pin connector. You need an SDS to check codes I believe.

My bad, it is an M103 on the 4-Matic for some reason.

Will Autozone read your codes free of charge? I've heard they do this.

Maybe it's the crank position sensor... have you tried the fuel pump relay though?

Could also be your EZL (or "Ignition Control Module"). Have you tried searching/posting on Mercedesshop.com?

Not sure where you could find it, but a friend of mine told me of a tool called a "magic mushroom" that plugs into your diagnostic socket and the codes are read via LEDs. Other than that, your only other choice may be to go to the dealer, have them read the code, tell you whats wrong, then just refuse the repair. Come home, buy it online and repair it yourself. Just a suggestion.

I solved the problem the wire connecting the crank sensor to the EZL was badly worn, and shortign out when hot, new crank sensor and i was good to go.
