89 190E Stuck in 3rd

My 89 190e runs and shifts fine until it reaches operating temp. Then it looses it's mind. While traveling at 50 mph the thing abruptly downshifts to third. There seems to be a bit of hesitation before this occurs. When I press the accelerator it will go to fourth, in the beginning of this cycle. As it warms more, it will stick in 3rd, but will downshift at a stop. Fluid and filter have been changed. Any ideas?

Put this in the 190E (W201) section for better odds of an answer.

Well, It might be two things in my opinion based on what i went through with my 86 300E. What happened to me is that it would get stuck in gears and would not shift. I was driving on the freeway and it shifted itself into Neuteral while in "D" position. It semmed to happen when it got hot. Now what I think you should do is take it to a oil change place and have them see if your trani fluid is overfilled. Because the fuild expands when its hot not cold. So if its overfilled it puts MUCH stress on the trani and causes it to be a ho. Try that and it it sill does it, you might need to take it in for some trani work.... I had to get my trani replaced. 1,300$ but it works great now. Let us know.
