Black Grille insert paint or buy?

I've spotted black grilles inserts in some of your photos. Looking on-line the photos of replacement grilles sometimes look black. Most are the lovely light gray. I called one supplier with a $65 replacement insert but they wouldn't unbox it to verify color. Buggers!

I like the stock three horizontal ribs vs. the (S) type aftermarket grilles. So, maybe it's time to try the rattle-can mod. I think I can get the stocker somewhat clean and shoot it but wonder if the paint will stick. Enamel was the plan.

Not good if the Homer paint job starts flaking off in a month.

i'm pretty sure they all start off black and fade to gray. just bust out a can of krylon fusion, sticks to plastic beautifully, and you should be good...

124 factory grill insert gray

The OE 124 grill insert is gray (not black on any model, any year).

My replacement black insert for my 300TE came off ebay from us auto parts, 888-348-5487, or carpartswholesale.com. From the invoice, item number M204 E-class 86-93 grille, inner, 124 chassis. Purchased 2003, $9.95 plus $11 shipping. I don't know if it is still available.

I sprayed my 190 grill insert Rustoleum flat black many years ago, and it held up pretty well. It chips when stones fly up off the road.

I used some rustoleum grille paint as a base, then some krylon clear enamel over it. Its lasted a few months, no chips. I definately prefer the 3-band look, though the 2-band look of the 190e is interesting as well...
