They're really only used for A/C... I thought mine were broken too but it is completely normal for them not to work using heat.

The middle vents dont come on with heat I tink because mercedes doesn;t want oyu falling alseep at the wheel, however they will blo heat if the outside temperture is extremely cold.

The center vents only blow cool air. You will never get heat out of them. However it is very common for one or more of the vacuum pods that control the vents to fail after 10-15 years. Here's a link with details on how to test all of them - you just need to pull the glovebox (or passenger airbag), and use a Mity-Vac:

unfortunately my center vents don't even blow cold! only my defroster and side vents work. i need to do the diy check on it sometime but its just been too busy...

on another note, does our A/C blow softer or harder depending on how much your on the gas? If i set the a/c on the lowest setting, it will still blow harder if I am stopped at a light with my foot off the gas then when I am just accelerating. only reason I ask is because it used to blow at one speed/setting no matter what. now it constantly fluctuates depending on the gas pedal.

I can't think what would cause that. The fan speed should modulate slowly with temp only. It may run slightly slower when stopped and idling due to decreased voltage, but I think it even compensates for that.

Also FYI, when you roll the temp knob all the way to the end of its travel and push it a bit further, there is another detent which puts it in max cool or max heat. Make sure you feel the click to test the modes.

The airflow speed will fluctuate based on vehicle speed, but not throttle position. At higher speeds, you'll get a little more airflow. And you'll notice more airflow with the windows open, or sunroof open. If throttle position affects anything, you might have a vacuum leak somewhere....
