Cool The CAT question

I see that a few of you mention "No Cat" in describing your machines.

I have a nice 89 300CE & 88TE. I am wondering if it is legal, to remove the "Cats" & what are the benefits in terms of performance.

No, of course not. None that’ll be discernable to its output, drivability, or fuel consumption.

You need the cat to pass state emissions testing.
Optimum is to replace the stock cat with a Magnaflow spun metal high flow cat...
This change will give you added performance on your M103.

Thanks, That is what I thought, hence the confusion over seeing a few "catless" mentions out there.

This will give you an idea of what the Magnaflow spun metal cat looks like.
They are only 9" long and about 4" in diameter.
Really a half price knock of of the original Random Technology design !!!

Catalytic converters WORK!!

Engine runs cleaner, less deposits, less wear. LESS REPAIR COSTS!

What utter bollocks!

The engine runs exactly the same with or without it. The only thing that's better is the emissions. Cats are expensive to replace hence MORE REPAIR COSTS!

Removing the cat will add 13bhp and would be legal in the UK for a 1989 car but I suspect there are different laws where you are.

Cap'n

You are so correct...
I doubt there is any state in the USA that a factory equipped cat vehicle could pass an emissions inspection with the cat removed.
There can be considerable fines as they come under Federal EPA regs.

The Magnaflow/Random Technology Spun metal cats will meet emissions with a very high flow rate.

I netted an 11HP increase on the dyno by switching from an OEM SL500 platinum brick type cat to twin Spun metal units on my M103-12V twin turbo install.

Much less expensive then a more restricitve OEM design...

P.S.

How is the TT install coming along ?

The W210 I'm driving is a pile of poo.

@ KenF, Apologies for my outburst. I'm normally a nice guy, honest.
