E320 will not start (1994)

This problem has happened twice the last year. When trying to start, it
turned over, but would not start. The first time this happened, I was
suspecting that maybe the alarm system was "glitched" and prevented it from
starting. I took the key out, locked the car and unlocked it again. After
this procedure it started right up.

Today I stopped at the store and turned the car off for 10 minutes. When I
came back, same problem. I tried the key procedure five times, but it did
not work. I went to call for help and came back 5-10 minutes later. I wanted
to try it one last time (the battery was almost dead at this time from
starting so many times). This time it started right up. Now I am real
puzzled. I am afraid to take the car to strange places.

A no-start condition could be dozens of things, but my first shot in the dark would be a bad fuel pump or fuel pump relay.

94 E320 no start

This is a fairly common and not a difficult problem to repair. However it will get more frequent. The "cure" is replacing the relay box which has developed a crack. This relay is found (I believe) under the main fuse box. I had this happen recently and after 8 mos of occasional "no-starts" spent the outrageous sum of 195.00 to have it replaced. Snaps in and thats it. Dealer knew what the problem was and still charged $85.00 to diagnose it while he stood there with the part in his hand.

I believe the relay sits on the left fender well..However, I wasn't watching when he repaired it so am not sure what it went to. Turned over just fine, but not even a hint of firing. If I can find my repair order, I can tell you exactly what it was and the part. Im in my office now but home in about an hour and can post then. What state are youin? Im in Tacoma WA. Your problem is EXACTLY what we experienced..happened occassionally and under no particular circumstances but became more frequent to thepoint I couldn't trust it.

I'm in Salem, Oregon. We should have the same weather.... nothing but rain. That probably explains it.

Don't think it has anything to do with the weather. Mostly with the temp under the hood and the small crack which microscopically probably expands in the heat. Im passing through Salem this week end on the way to Springfield. Hope you get it fixed. Give the local Benz dealer a call. Bob Walter

The weather thing was a joke. Did you find the repair order? I would like to know which part they replaced and what the partnumber is.

Thanks again,
Roar

My wife didn't remember where she put it. I'll call Larson Motors in a bit and have them look up the order. I'll get back to you after a while. If you want to email directly..send it to <rwaltco@yahoo.com> regards, Bob Walter

similar problem

I had a similar problem with my '94 E320. The car would stall intermittently while I was driving, so that I would lose power steering and brakes. After it stalled, I would not be able to restart the car for a couple minutes. On short trips (such as going to an ATM), after turning off the car, sometimes I would not be able to restart the car for a couple minutes. I first noticed the problem about 9 months ago, but it did not happen very often. Finally, it stalled on me almost daily, so I had to get it fixed. I went to the dealer and under the mechanics recommendation had my engine wiring harness replaced, which turned out not to fix the problem. Replacing the fuel relay did not help either. The problem finally turned out to be replacing the overload protection circuit. Boy was I mad for doing all that other stuff first, especially since the wiring harness cost almost $1000 and the protection circuit was around $100.

Walter,
I took the fuel pump relay out and checked it. I applied power to the relay and measured the contact resistance. It looks OK. The car is still in my garage. Some people have suggested the overvoltage protection relay. Did you find out what the shop did to your car?

Thanks again

I replaced the OVP (Over Voltage Protection) relay and it seems to have fixed it. I paid $62 +$6 shipping for the relay from mercedesshop.com.

Bob, don't fret over the money spent replacing the engine wiring harness. You would've had to replace it at some point anyhow. I replaced mine simply as a preventive measure.
