95 E320 won't start getting DTC code 17

Help,

I now cannot get my 95 e320 to turn over now. Last week it would not turnover then I heard like a buzzing noise like the fuel pump then it was find. Today it did it again only when the buzzing noise came on it only stayed running for 30 seconds. Now no more buzzing sound when i turn the key and i did the Dianostic Module test and is show code 17 : data exchange malfuction between individual control modules. Its like its out of gas and wont turn over.

Somebody help me please!!

Maybe bad fuel pump relay

First place I would look for the problem is the fuel pump relay. This relay has been reported to be a problem. I believe it's located behind the battery.

fuel pump relay

Hey Kestas,

Thanks for the reply! I tt a service tech at our local MB dealer. He sd to check the over voltage relay behind battery also. It is the silver box w/ a 15 amp blue fuse in it in the clear plastic cover. The fuse was good but no way to tell if relay is bad until I invest 150 for the switch when i took out the fuse and put it back in, I heard some clicking and buzzing but still did not turn over . So you think its the fuel pump relay? Where exactly is this switch behind battery. I saw a big silver/blkbox w/ big and small plugs going into it> They were easy to plug in and out of this box. How much is this fuel pump relay and is it easy to replace? Do you recomment a DIY site or manual for this car?

Joe

I agree with checking the OVP relay. The old ones are another known problem. They've been updated with an improved replacement. The OVP is located under the hood at the passenger side rear. It's a silver colored rectangular thing behind the black plastic cover on the firewall side of the battery with a fuse or two visible on the top. You won't be able to see it unless you remove the plastic cover. Check your OVP for the known bad part number, 000-540-52-45. It says “Made in Austria” on it. If that is the part number on you OVP, get the new updated OVP - replacement number 000-540-67-45. The 52 45's are known trouble-makers. I've heard some people salvage them by reflowing the solder joints inside the unit.

Beyond that, I don't have a foolproof way of diagnosing the problem except by substituting suspect parts with good ones.

You can get a CD manual for this car on eBay or have another member burn you a copy.
