If you really want a jump in mileage and your not too impatient. Find a Big rig doing 70mph and slip in behind him get about 10 feet from his bumber and ride his tail like your life depends on it. As long as he doesn't know your back there you're fine. You can get about a 40% increase in mileage. I used to do it with my Saturn SL and the jump was from 37 mpg to 53-56 mpg. haven't gotten the chance in my 124 "yet"

ive done that before, but it only takes one obstacle in the road that the big rig can comfortably cruise over to change your mindset on that one.

in my case, i think it was a folding chair.

My sister got a re-tread kicked up at 75mph, crushed the whole front of the CE in. I still havnt gotten around to getting a new hood, the one side is about a 1/2in further back than the other. Dangerous to be behind one of those and following close, not worth the potential MPG gains via drafting :\

Yea those things are both true. Again I was in my 250k Saturn the last time I did it and i can one of those for the price of a wiring harness on the 124. i guess it is a rust bucket or beater trick.

I've driven my 95 E320 with 116k miles about 1k miles since obtaining it, with steadily improving mileage. I used QuikTrip, which is a top tier gas, for two fill-ups, #1 - avg 22.7 mpg, #2 included a 140mile highway trip - averaged just over 24mpg for just under about 14.8 gals. One fill-up of Chevron, which included the return trip of 140 miles, averaging about 26.5 on just over 15gals. Just filled-up this morning, 400 miles on one tank, and the light was not yet on. I think I drive a little too agressively (just got out of an Infiniti G35), and on the return highway trip, I had the A/C on 90% of the time. Most driving consists of at least 10-20 mins one way, with not a lot of stop and go. I'm loving it. This new fill-up was QT again, and probably will not have any extensive highway driving.

I decided to calculate my mileage, looks like I'm going to get about 450 km on this tank, mostly city driving, and I've mashed the pedal a few times (hit 220 and 170 a couple times on the highway), driving conservatively I could probably get about 600km on a tank.

The way I used to drive it was more like 350km a tank, so I'm not spending too much more on gas.

I tried figuring out my miles per gallon. Converting I've figured out my tank is about 13.2 gallons, as there are 4.55 litres in a gallon.

I have what looks like a 1/4 tank left, and I've driven 440km, so I figure I'll get about 550km on this tank.

550/13.2 = 41.67km/gallon

34/1.61 = 25.88 miles / gallon with 90% city driving.

Not even close to as bad as I thought my car would be, I thought I would be around 10 or so, LOL.

I'm getting about 9.2km for a litre, at 1.50 or so for premium that isn't that expensive, when I'm driving less than 20km/day. That is less than 4$ day on gas to drive. :dunno:

I'm not complaining anymore, that is pretty damn cheap.

Would be nice if it was cheaper, but that isn't bad at all, I spend more on water every day.

Edit - looks like the tank is a little bigger than 60 litres, how many gallons is it?

My 320 has a 18.7 gallon tank. light comes on at 15 - 15.25 gone. I fill up at the light and get between 280 and 300 miles for the 15.125 used and it works out to between 18.6 and 20 around town and 27 on the highway at 70 mph.

I just took a road trip across washington state a month ago... I got an average of 23.5 MPG (99% hwy). In the past, when I measured my MPG with 75%+ city driving, I averaged 18 MPG.

Not very good. But every time I sit down and calculate the money savings of buying a new/newer more fuel-efficient car vs. keeping the merc, the merc is always lower-cost... hands down.

Essentially no depreciation, no interest or cash outlays from high car payments, lower insurance payments, etc. Maintenance cost is definitely much higher, but it doesn't come anywhere close to the costs of a new car, even with the worse gas mileage and premium gas...

So my point is, we should keep this whole MPG thing in check. Most of our alternatives are more expensive.

I'm on that same page. It is hard to save money by spending money. Bottom line is people will find a way to afford the things they really want. We all seem to really want our 124's.

you cant beat zero payments and non existent depreciation (depreciation only really counts if you are going to sell the car.) running costs ARE higher than modern cars. they need spark plugs and wires much more frequently, oil changes cost more (more oil) stuff is just older and more broke down etc. but my avg repair costs per month are less than $50. i get my car fixed about once a year, works out to about $600. oil changes i do myself. same for minor repairs (brakes etc)

new car means no repair costs. but what, $400 a month and higher insurance? so i can save 5- 10 miles per gallon? that works out to what, $6 a tank? $20?

no thanks. i'll keep the tank.


im pretty sure the fuel tanks only came in 17.XX and 21.XXX sizes. the larger tanks were used on the V8s and diesels.

I really don't know what my MPG is but it can't be good. Every week I get a "thank you" card from the Saudi Oil Minister and if I don't fill it up every 2-3 days OPEC convenes an emergency meeting.
Both BP and Exxon-Mobil have taken out life insurance policies on me.

Then again I have a 500E, the SPG (Smiles Per Gallon) is in the millions.

Seriously, under 10 but those rear 275/40/17 PS2's really grip and it would be a shame, not to mention irresponsible and insulting, not to use all the power and torque that M-B has kindly provided. I'd be too embarrassed and couldn't hold my head up if I only drove the speed limit.
But compared to my Ghibli, which gets around 7 mpg, it's positively fuel efficient.

Besides, if I wanted better gas mileage I'd buy a Hummer.

So I don't get accused of hijacking this thread, I regularly get 800 Km from a full tank in my 300CE-24. The highest was 880 but it was getting very low. The best fuel consumption was 30 mpg (UK) on a 800 Km journey at an average speed of 60-70 mpg.

Yeah, you can get personalized plates in Finland, as you've seen.
I'm not sure of the price, but a friend told me they're somewhere between 500-2000 euroes, which is crazy! Here in Canada it is only a couple hundred dollars.

Not trying to be a jackass, it is an honest question: Do you know of any countries which don't allow for personalized plates? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I average around 19-20 i would imagine. never really calculated it

I usually drive until my light comes on then put in $10, which is around $10 a day, i might fill up next time i go to the pump, but i also noticed that different gas stations give different results

I ALWAYS used chevron because it is the only station that has an additive that actually does what it says, and i have noticed that my car runs much better on chevron than other station's gas but i recently started using BP and i don't notice any difference in the way the car runs but the gas seems to last longer and is on average about $10 less than chevron because BP does not import from arab countries as far as i know . . .

I can get 325-350 miles on one tank of gas, without light coming on (mixed driving, city/highway), and 400+ if I take it on the trip...highway driving!

I do a lot of highway driving, and get 24-25MPG. 95' E320 Wagon, it has a larger tank than sedan. 19gal and some change.

Good news! At 120 mph, the '95 E320 with 190k miles on it gets around 20 mpg with the new mass air sensor... guess how i know .... but so far my best highway mileage per gallonage has been 25.5; and that was with about 200lbs in the rear (with the gear) and with my three... American-sized (polite, yes? ) friends on the way back from Destin to Atlanta. City mpg is another story though... Ive been averaging 15 to 16 (but that was with a bad mass air)
