pls help e300 4matic 1994?

Hi. I am considering to buying an e300 w124 4matic station wagon with a 240,000 kms on it. I have a few questions i want to ask and i was hoping anybody can answer my questions:

1. How many kilometers per liter does this engine produce?
2. Does 4matic mean 4 gears or all 4 wheels are working?
3. If it has a 4 wheel system how would you know if all four wheels are engaging?
4. I do not know the car history but when i test drove the car it sounds and felt like the car ran effortlessly and silently. At this condition, what are the things i should look into before deciding to buy it? By the way, the car sells for 9,000$ in US dollars.

My chart doesn't show a '94 300TE 4-Matic. I guess it would have to have the 104.992 engine. At $9,000 purchase price I have two words: RIP OFF.

Things to look out for would be the biodegradable wiring harness ($900 US Diy), Transmission ($1500), Head Gasket ($1200), and at that mileage (150,000 Miles) everything that moves related to the suspension, ($Arm.Leg). I would pass on it if I were you. You should be able to find a decent one with less miles for around $6000.

They get around 19 mpg in town, mid twenties on the highway. Sorry, I'm too lazy to convert that to liters per kilometer. Or kilometer per liter. That just makes my head hurt to think about it.

Not certain about outside the US, however the only 124 4Matic I know of has the M103 motor. I don't think they made the 4matic for the 104 motor.

Besides the issues brought up by shdoug, this iteration of 4Matic had problems with leaking, and It's a costly repair. Not one of MB shining stars.

FYI,

I have 160,000 miles on my 95' M104 and other than the harness at 70K, the items mentioned have not been a problem. And I'm REAL picky.

Is your suspension original, or does "Sportline" mean you modified it? I'm being serious; I've never known what Sportline Suspension is. 160,000 miles on original suspension is admirable.

I think the pavement/potholes in Omaha doubles as a test track for many auto makers. At 160,000 miles mine needed a lot of suspension work, I'm told. The roads here are among the worst in the country.

shdoug,

The wagons have some Sportline (MB's factory tuned sport suspension)pieces that come as stock. Sway bars and bushings. At 130k I put on front Sportline springs and shocks because I wanted a firmer ride. The rear is original. One can lower the rear a bit due to the self leveling feature. This helps match up with the front mods.

Yes I'm fortunate to have smooth roads in Virginia. We don't get the frost heaves and such. I also have a 91' with 205K. The front shocks were replaced at 135K, and that's about it. That's a 103 motor however, and have done all the motor related things you mentioned. I find the 104 a better lump in my oprionion.

Some of the 124's were offered with this option. Besides the suspension, they have a smaller diameter steering wheel with a quicker ratio. The seats have more bolster, and they have a "Sportline" badge on lower fender as well as the shift knob. Probably a few other things as well.

The smaller steering wheel is a must. The standard wheel is like driving a bus.

LOL

The 94'-95' wheel is a little smaller than the prior models. The Sportline is smaller yet.

I was thinking Virginia was cold. I might have to look into that. Cold is very unpleasant. Most of our pavement problems here I think are due more to politics than weather. They would rather put down cheap asphalt every 5 years, which lasts about 2 years, than put down concrete which lasts 20 years. It keeps the construction industry going and gives the local government an excuse to keep raising property taxes so they can waste more money elsewhere.
