jeep cherokee at the mo, thinking about a w124 300d
Hello everyone, can you help me
Hi , I'm looking to buy a new (well old) car. one of the ones on the table is a 300d estate. As much as I know the W124 is built like a tank, I worry about the economy.
I'm thinking of getting a diesel estate for pulling my race car, commuting to the day job, has a little luxury, and occasionally sleeping in (I'm not homeless, I mean as a big tent in case i go off to europe on a jolly) I've got a max budget of £1500
I had a jeep Cherokee for this, it was great but too thirsty! (for those american readers, diesel in the uk is about $8.50 per US gallon.)
I was wondering what MPG i can realistically expect. Please say if you're talking US gallon or Imperial gallon.
other ideas on the table are BMW 525tds, Volvo 850, possibly mk3 mondeo if I can find one cheap enough. Any advice on these? (I know you'll all say Get the merc, but aside from that.)

i have no clue about diesels, and most of the people on here don't have diesels either.
if i were you, i would look into joining a british site like mbclub.co.uk, they would be the most helpful, and could probably even find/sell you a car...

With normal driving, you can expect 750 KM on 60 L. If you drive conservatively, you can push 900 KM on a tank. (at least on an '87 300 D Turbo). If you drive with a lead foot, 600 KM.

In the US the only 124 Estate Diesel available was a 1987. It has a 3.0 6CYL Turbo, and MB does not approve towing with this. I had one, and the mileage averaged 27 per US gallon. Spirited driving various highway and city.
Not certain what you have available. My version had a lot of problems due to the turbo and emission control devices causing serious engine problems. Warped head, and the like.
