turn off automatic headlamp washers?

The last few days I noticed that when i turn on my headlights, the wipers/washers on the headlights activate for a few seconds to clean the headlights. Did i turn on a setting by mistake? It wasn't doing this a few days ago... any ideas on how to stop this?

Like they are spraying on the lights or just moving? They should only spray when you spray the windshield with the lights on. I removed my wipers but you can just unplug the motors I think, unless you WANT them to work...

they're doing both, spraying and moving... just by themselves, i'm not intentionally spraying anything.
I just don't know why it started doing this now, i think i activated something somehow. weird.

It sounds like there's a relay stuck on. It should not wash the headlights until you press the end of the combo switch.

It's in relay box F1, relay code "D", Designation K2- whatever all that means. The document is 5 megs or I would upload it.

Where I live, if you drive at night in the winter you better have some kind of headlight washers or you'll be stopping every 2 miles to use your Windex and a towel. Besides, they look cool if you don't have the projectors.

where is the relay? i want to hit it with a hammer or something.
now i'm out of washer fluid and one of the wipers is pointing straight up. i can get to the driver's side plug easily, but the passenger side is a b!tch... and i'm not sure unplugging them will prevent it from squirting fluid still...

Here is a diagram of the relay box F1. It is relay "D", according to my diagram.

shdoug, In that diagram - Do you know where the relay for the AUX fan is and also the relay for the AC/heater?

Zeddy, Seems like it's a relay problem.

At first I thought you just had your lights on along with the foglights which enable the headlight wipers to go on when you use the windshield wipers but I read your question wrong. lol

The Aux fan is relay C in the F1 diagram. The relay for the AC/Heater Electronic Blower Regulator is N29 on this diagram. It's hard to tell from the pic, but I think I read somewhere that you access it through the center vents. Sorry it's sideways. I don't have a real drawing program on my home PC.

okay. i took the relay out, and opened it up. I stuck it back in, and turned on the lights. I can see the relay close when i turn on the lights.
what i'm going to do is put a piece of plastic or something in there so when the relay closes, it doesn't make contact so the wipers don't come on.
my question is, does this relay do anything else, or is it just for my wipers? if it's just for my wipers, then i can either block the relay, or just remove it altogether...

in case anyone wants to see what the relay looks like inside:

this is the relay when it's open, i circled where the contact is:

this is when the solenoid closes the relay (i used a screw driver to push it closed). You can see the tiny spring that keeps tension on the gate when it closes, that pulls it back open. amazing little piece of machinery!

messed with the lights with the relay out. looks like the relay doubles as the turn signal relay too... i'm going to try to stop it from contacting and see if the turn signals will work or not

edit: okay, i lied, the turn signals still work! i'm just going to remove the relay, and hopefully problem solved!

Sorry, Zed. I was just copying the link so I didn't read your post.

I can't believe it- page 163 is missing from my manual!!! That's the page that shows where those contacts feed. Regardless, according to the diagram that relay should not energize until Combination Switch S4 is closed. I think your problem is a bad contact on the turn signal stalk combo switch (S4). Although the diagram seems to indicate that this would cause the windshield wipers to also operate all the time.

Update: Found the missing page! That relay only powers the headlamp wipers/washer pump so if you disconnect it nothing else should be affected.
