Just got a 1992 300E - Sputtering
I just got my new (to me) 300E.
The price was right, but there is an issue.
She will run fine most of the time, but then, when accelerating she sputters. It seems that she's missing fuel or spark, there's no power to accerlerate but then on other times, it's just fine.
I replaced fuel filter, dist cap and rotor but no change.
What could it be?

I had the same issue, turned out to be a bad Injector. May also be a bad spark plug. Mine through a code, but it was a 1994, and the code wasn't right anyway.

make sure your plug wires are on properly. i had a persistent sputter that i solved simply by just moving them around.
i had to diagnose it on an unlit street one night, and messing with it did nothing. so when my cousin was here one day she complained that it was getting excessive (it was ok under low load conditions) so all i did was pu**** in harder and move it sideways some. easy fix. saved myself $400 in new wires.

try the ovp relay, i have read on here that it causes similar problems. as always before throwing money at it, bring it to a shop and have it checked out.

i usually do a complete tuneup if im going to get wires; plugs, fuel and air filters, cap, rotor, etc.

Still does the same thing.
Another symptom is that is runs perfect until the engine reaches operating temperature, then it starts to misbehave.
I'm thinking it may be simply the ignition coil..
Would that usually give a error code? The check engine light is still dark.
any thoughts?

As soon as I read this I thought "ignition coil", and then I read it.
It could be wires also. I'm not sure how advanced the old K-Jet was at diagnosing itself. It might not be that smart. Modern cars can detect if you farted while you were filling the fuel tank but the old ones had a lot less inputs and control algorithms.

Thank God, I was worried yesterday at the shell station My Check engine light came on and I had no clue why. Now I realize the White castle sliders i ate earlier in the day combined with sneakin out a slilent killer at the pump tripped an error code (code117.1 methane reading too rich) it cleared this morining when I started her up for the work commute. Shdoug thanks for the heads up!

Thanks! The car's system says that nothing is wrong,
move along..nothing to see here.
Already put new wires on to no avail...
I'll check the coil. I assume that the old ohmmeter test is valid for these coils? 0.75 to 0.8 ohms for primary and 10000 to 11000 secondary??

I think the best way to check it is to tap on the case while taking a reading and see if it changes. If it does, it's shot. I actually discovered this years ago by mistake. I had a coil I thought was bad but it read like it was fine. I accidentally dropped it, took another reading and it had changed. I banged it on the table and it changed again. Something was loose or shorting out inside.
