Need new headgastket... 1500 good price?
Hey guys,
I need a new headgasket for my 92 300E. The shop that I plan on having the work done at quoted me around 1500 for the job. Is this price about average for this kind of repair?
Thanks,
Leo

I would think more like $1200. $1500 is not a rip off if they do a great job and get it done fast, though.

IF they are just breaking off the head and slappin a new gasket on that isn't a great price. If they plane the head and dip it (acid bath/cleaning) then it isn't good. Are they going to do the timing chain while they are in there. It should be no added labor cost just the parts (unless they replace the guides and then it is a nominal labor cost) If you are doing a head gasket just go ahead and do the chain unless it has been already done.

Head gasket kit (complete top end set) $100 - $125
Sending the head to be reconditioned (optional but I never do a job with out doing this) ($200-$300)
Head Bolts $35 -$45
Timing Chain and Chain Guides $150
All the other things $50.00 (gasket adhesive, oil, filter, coolant etc)
You should also give yourself a good long weekend to complete.
SO if you got about 24 hours of labor in you and the tools and the know how. then your all set.
