Water pump replacement cost?

Hi Guys, my Benz is a 1992 300ce-24, and i've just had my original water pump replaced, because it started to leak.
My mechanic replaced it with a genuine Aftermarket Pump, and this was a steep $650 Aust, and labour was 6.5 hours,as apparently it is a big job, so i just want to know if this is around the mark, and considered normal. Also, apparently, the 24 valve model takes a slightly different pump to the normal 300ce. Many Thanks in advance.

O.K. keeping it simple, how long should a mechanic take to change the water pump?

Whether it takes them 1 hour or 2 days, most of them just look in the book and charge you what it says. I would think 4 hours would be plenty. Maybe he had trouble with the tube on the back. Not a fun job. The overall cost I've heard is around $700 US.

I agree. I seem to recall that mine was around CAD$450 for the pump (32valve V8 500E) and 4 hrs labour.
My mechanic said it was not difficult to get at - radiator did not have to come out.

Inline 6 might be tighter clearance at the rad.

Thanks for your reply's guys, as this gives me a general idea now, and i think they may have taken more time then they should have to do the job. This was the first time i had to do anything to my car since my service garage changed hands of ownership, and i don't think the people their are as compitent as before, so next time i will take the car somewhere else. They did say that my radiator and basically the front section of the engine had to come out in order to take the waterpump out successfully. Sounds ridiculous that they should have to do all this just to get the waterpump out.

Those German midget bodybuilders who assembled it didn't have to take the radiator out! It is tight but if you don't mind slicing your hand a few times on the radiator fins you could leave it in.
