Two graphite gray metallic 500E's on Ebay...which one?

What do you guys think? The first 500E has a buy-it-now of $10,500 with 141,000 miles, the second one on ebay in graphite gray monochrome treatment and AMG 18s with a BIN of $9500 in Chattanooga, but it has 262k. Even with the miles, the second one is beggin me to come get it, only an hours drive from Atlanta...I know it's completely irrelevant to this car, but check out the EPA of 14/17, my 06 Navigator gets better mileage

Buy the lower miles and work out the movement later.

Seller of car 1 is well known on some boards and is the kind of seller I would always recommend. (I've never bought or sold anything to nor met the seller)

Good luck!!

Go for the high mileage car....
It was sold to the current owner by Reed Hitchcock from Northern Virginia.
Reed is a contributing editor to Mercedes Enthusist mag out of the UK and this car was featured monthly with the changes he was making to it.
It should have service records back to when the car was new....
That means a great deal over mileage..

I agree. Also be sure to check out or ask the seller about those leaks - find out if it's coming from the power steering/SLS pump which is costly to repair. And yes, be prepared for that MPG, lol...

Didn't know it was Bahnstormers car.....so both choices are better then average as owned by real enthusiasts.

He's selling it to complete his widebody coupe and do the twin turbo install

Sooo, flip a coin, buy one and bring her home!

What an incredible pricepoint to be in one of these cars. How many years would go by before you could lose 33% of your buy in value?

Really soft market for the 500e right now. The Detroit auction ended with no bids, I checked eBay for recent sales, a 93 black/black in good condition, records, AZ car, 150k miles, sold for $7950. Nice to know you can acquire one of the finest M-Bs ever made ( a Mercedes/Porsche collaboration nonetheless) for less than 8 grand. So by the same logic, by 2023 you should be able to find a nice CLK63 Black Series for $10,000 (adjusted for inflation)

A 500 E is a classic since it was released, the CLK63 is not and will not

It's been a while since I've been on this forum due to travel & spending a lot more time on the Porsche Rennlist forums as I'm modifying the 951 I bought last year.

Yep - that was my 500e.... What a nightmare selling "special" cars on ebay is. That was the second time I had listed it - the first "buyer" assumed that the car had a fuel efficient six cylinder in it & backed out of the deal. There are a couple of local guys that came to look at it over the weekend & are interested, though alas I'm travelling again. It is a nice car - very honest & solid. Great driver & amazingly clean interior - plus it has a very good history of essential service.

I now have 6 cars & with the widebody going to the paint booth in a week, I just can't justify keeping the 500e.

Let me know if you would like more information; I would prefer that this 500e go to an enthusiast on one of the forums.

Here's the latest couple of widebody pictures - this was the first time the car had sat on terrafirma for almost a year. I was happy with the stance!

Oh, and I would definitely say that the clk63 black series became an instant classic when released. Had the pleasure of driving one last month in Vegas - stunning.

Wink

Just my 2 cents....don't EVER buy a 500E site un-seen....no offense bluecoupe btw.

The cheaper in price they are, the more $$ you'll have to dump into it.

It's a very nice car....

I negotiated for a few months prior to the EBAY listing with the owners agent who is selling the cars.
They also have a 45K mile 94 E320 Cab on EBAY and are holding back an SL and SEC.

I offered in the twenties, but they are looking for low or mid thirties..

Market has softened even on low mileage pristine cars.

Look at the Cab market, now is the time to buy...good examples in the mid teens...a year or two ago mid twenties for the same quality.

Great time to buy what will become collectable Mercs

Not according to me....

In March I paid $28K for a 44K mile 500E, original owner, ALL service records, M-B car cover, every bit of original paperwork -- window sticker, original invoice, radio code card, flat key, even the business card of the salesman, AMG 3 piece alloy wheels plus the original 8 hole's, some NOS uninstalled AMG and RENNTech stuff from the period, etc.

Did I overpay?
Perhaps, but............ try to find another one like this. I looked from July to March for a car like this, it pretty much was my full time job, and I had not found anything near as nice. Even Hatch's 9,000 mile car was not as nice.
So worst case scenario, I over paid. I would have only wasted it on some young Eastern European blond anyway.
I should have bought a Hummer, it would get better gas mileage.

Remember, the joy of ownership remains long after you get sick from eating dog food out of a can because you spent all your money on the damn car.

If you got what you wanted, then you paid what it's worth...

Doesn't change the fact that the overall Merc market has softened over the past six+ months

I would agree w/ ^^^. I definitely overpaid for my C43 if you looked at the market 2 years ago, and ESPECIALLY w/n 6 months of my purchase. But, I got everything I wanted and more, and am comfortable w/ dropping 5 pr 6 grand more than I probably had to to know that it is perfect. But that doesn't change the fact that all MB markets have softened in the last year or so. There are a lot of guys (especially over on the 500e board) who swear these cars will still pull 30's if in good condition, and while that might be the case in the event that the right buyer is found (read: sale in correct part of country, and someone is in the market for one at that price point), generally speaking I still hold my ground in saying that a pristine 500e/e500 is solidly in the 20's now for all intents and purposes. More than 100k on the clock, and I doubt many will buy for more than 15k. Definitely some quality metal for under 10 even nowadays. So its a good time to be a buyer!
