Transfer case woes, 1991 4-matic

20021216

We are having more trouble with the transfer case on our 1991 4-matic wagon (300te). At 98k this case was replaced with some help on the cost from MBNA, but it has now gone out anew and no more MBNA assistance.

This car has been trouble from when we picked it up in Stuttgart with 19 miles on it. It cost MB $17,000 in the first 60K miles for warranty work, part of which was likely due to dealer ineptitude.

Should the tranfer case be going out every 100k or so (now has 215k miles)? Can anyone shed light on similar situations, etc? Does anyone accessible to small shops (or to us as customers) supply rebuilt cases, etc?

Thanks ever so much for your help,

Jim & Anne Hardwick

Jim,
I'm no expert but I think the transfer case can act up after 100k. There is a 4matic owners group that has a lot of knowledge / experience with these cars. Let me know if you would like to contact them.
