Should I keep my 1986 300E?
I have a 1986 300E that I am thinking about selling and possibly getting a newer model such as a 1990 or so. The '86 has 160k miles and is in fairly good shape and runs well, but needs paint and a few other minor things done to it. Should I just keep the '86 or should I sell and get a newer model? How much would an '86 300E like mine be worth? Please let me know your opinions. Thanks.

If you get a new model...
get a 94-95. It has the improved engine and the better set of lights. The 124's are considered the last real MB's before cost cutting methods.
Remember, if you get a newer car, you may still have some problems. May be not the same problems but, still problems. Try to get a warranty. That is probably what I am going to do in the future...
I have a 86 300E with over 200,000 miles. It has some minor problems but, it gets me around in style. As a resale, you won't get much on the market. Depending on looks, records and condition AND who is buying it.
Check all your options, then make a decision. Good luck!

MBWorld Fanatic!
if it's only to trade it for a "newer" model, I would say it's not worth it. You still have the "same" car and you know your present car and its bugs, however you wont know the bugs of the "new" car. I have 2 W124's with well over 180K mls and since they are not much worth on the market I'll keep them until they are ready for the junk yard (hope that's far, far ahead)

I would say keep it unless you are hung up on superficial external details.
I had a 1986 300E that I had to sell when I moved out of the country (England) after owning it 8 years. I sold it to a friend (always a risky thing to do) who owned it a further 4 years. He then sold it because he had to move out of the country, too! And he was sorry he had to sell it (just as I had been).
I can still hear in my mind the sweet sound of that straight-six winding up through the gears.
If you've got a good one, keep it. It will be hard to improve on.
