AC... NOT!!!

Just had the evaporator and expansion valve in my 1995 e320 wagon replaced. According to the gauge, the system is full with a new charge of 134. I got cold air out of it for about an hour but now I get no cold air. I think the compressor is running and I can see the fans in front of the condenser going full bore.

Any idea what i should check to find out why there is no cold air coming out of the vents... just air at the ambient temp.

Thanks.
J.

welcome to the forum.

Chances are you have a leak somewhere on the fittings, try some of that oil dye based stuff to see if you can seal the leak, and then recharge again.

I'll check for leaks again but the guy who replaced the evap/exp valve said it held a charge just fine. Also, I tried to add 134 to it (thinking that there was a leak but the gauge showed that it has a full charge.

This really sucks as it is VERY hot in DC this week.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Look for the telltale signs of oil around any of the connections. It is very difficult to properly charge a 134a system by pressure or by the sight glass but it should at least give you some idea. The best way is to evacuate the system and recharge by weight. There is a sight glass on the receiver/drier (probably need to wipe the grime off the glass window). If you see bubbles then the charge is probably low. No bubbles indicate either full charge or no charge so not too informative!

If you measure the low side pressure, it will be in the 90psi range (varies greatly with temperature) when the compressor is not running. When the compressor runs this should drop into the 25-35 psi range. Have you also measured the high side pressure?
