Question E320 Filling fuel tank, PROBLEM

Yesterday after driving about 250 miles I stopped to fill the tank. After the pump shut off as usual I tried to pump a little extra fuel. Suddenly the fuel began gushing out with such force the stream was about one foot in the air. I would guess that I lost 1/2 to 1 gallon. Finally, it slowed enough so that I could install the cap.

I have filled the tank numerous times using this method with incident. Do I have a problem with a valve etc, or am I doing something wrong???
Any help will be appreciated

Actually the same thing happened to me once. I never ever top off my tank, but a friend of mine agreed to fill up my tank since I was giving him a ride. He was trying to be nice and give me as much gas as possible by topping off, but ended up eating the paint on the side of my car. I havent had a problem since, and this was well over a year ago. I would say not to be worried, just avoid topping off.

I always top off my tank. Just pull the trigger lightly and you can stop it yourself if you see it coming too close to the top.

I think the problem is with either the pump you used of the way you used it. Ever notice the tiny little hole down a bit from the tip? This hole senses the fuel bubbling up. If this feature doesn't work on the nozzle, or if fuel somehow isn't splashing on that hole, the pump won't shut off. This is why the nozzle sometimes doesn't shut off when it's upside down.
