There is a sensor measuring the coolant level.
Try to clean it. If it does not work, just replace it. Cheap: about $20.00

the sensor sit on the lower right side of the coolant expansion container. It has a 2-prong electric connetor. Just plull the connetor, and take the switch out. You will loose some coolant, like 1 quart (1 liter) or so, which needs of corse to be replaced.

I'd go with water...?

Of course, you can buy additives that are colder but unless you live in the Sahara I don't see a point in it.

Distilled water is preferable, that's what I usually use.

+1 for distilled water, if you use normal stuff, it will cause residue build up.

Distilled water,,, come on boys... honestly... the way i drive my car...

I would only run distilled water in the winter months... or if its a casual crusier with very little weekly milage...

I use the MERCEDES APPROVED COOLANT!!!

Though i did replace my antenna with the chinese variante from the factory OEM part for 3 x as much as the china part...

LOL
but yeah run the mercedes approved collant only cost $25
