Exhuast upgrades
An engine is simply an air pump. You want as much air in and out as quickly as possible. Forced cars respond dramatically to exhaust upgrade simply due to the fact that the additional air that is 'forced' in needs to exit at the same speed or greater to be efficient. Power is in your heads. Velocity of air flow is more important than volume though a great deal of both is fantastic. We here about volumetric efficiency which refers to this point.
With N/A cars, the size of your primary pipe (headers) is the most important part as the idea is for the set up to draw away (vaccum) from the exhaust port (try sucking water from a cup with a straw and then with 50mm pipe!!).
With my E500 all I will be doing is retaining the standard system including the cats (great from factory) and simply running 2 high flow stainless mufflers for great sound and some minor improvement in flow (performance). Unless you are increasing airflow to the manifold (cold air etc) don't increase primary pipe size - you won't lose HP but you will lose bottem end torque and torque wins races.
Exhausts are a simple science if you uinderstand the rest of the engine.

The flow restriction is in the stock cat and you will see a HP gain by getting better flow rate.

Hopefully in the future i can manage some way to get more air in the box...I hate the fact that its so hard to get more cold air in that engine.....

Turbo upgrade
Just wondering what is available as far as tuning software. I'm in Australia so very limited. I am planning on fitting a single turbo to my 211 E500 so will need to attend to AFR's, injector cycle, timing etc.
Anyone know of anything? Obviously it is around for aftermarket tuners (Brabus etc).
Drive safe.

What was the size of your stock piping at its largest?
