95 e320...sold the rest
I plan on switching oil brands too this summer. I was thinking about Royal Purple...but I'm seeing soooo many different weights...I don't know which one to go with.

Yeah, the oil story is pretty much never ending.
Here is Ze Official MB oil list for the W124
In Temperate zones with temperatures up to +30 C (+86 F) Motoroil with SAR 5w30 and 10w30 can be used year round.
The temperature ranges listed are ambient temperature, not engine/oil temperatures.
20w40/50 - From 0C (+32F) to over +30C (+86F)
15w40/50 - From -15C (+5F) to over +30C (+86F)
10w40 - from -20C (+5F) to over +30C (+86F)
5w50 - from below -20C (-4F) to over +30C (+86F)
That's what the manual says at least
I'm running 15w40 right now, but i'm not very happy with it. The hydraulic lifters are being a bit ticky when cold and such. Next oil change i will probably try some 10w40. Should be a good compromise between all the oils.
Anyway, i hope this helped your decision a bit.

the oil that is on my car now is 10w30 and i have about 800 miles till change..... soo i will go with probably 15w40 or 50?

The important question is what condition is your engine in....
If it is well maintained, leak free, tight and within factory tolerances, then go with synthetic oil of the correct viscosity for your weather conditions. I have run Mobil 1 with NO issues & the car runs better with it.
If you already have leaks, limited knowledge of history etc, then stay with mineral to suit your engine / demographic temp needs.

Last summer I ran Castrol Syntec 10w30. After I had the engine rebuilt I went to Castrol GTX high mileage 10w30. I'm pretty confused with all this stuff but I think I'm gonna go with conventional 15w40 at my next oil change... Maybe I'll look into royal purple...

lol yah i remember you telling me that.. and yah butch was like his best friend or something, hes had many many cars, and bikes the bald guy lol pretty nice guy i see in in Kirkland downtown water front every now and then with this bike and buddys

help guys!!!
i've got a 1995 E320 cab w/ 81k miles and it's got clicking sound.
i changed the oil to 10W30 mobile 1 synthetic last month, and it's still clicking.
this board is filled w/ mixed opinion on whether i should use mineral or synthetic on a 14 yr old car, especially if it likely used regular oil until i bot the car 2 yrs ago.
shall i go back to mineral and see if the clicking sound goes away?
shall i try 10W40 mobile 1 and see if that's better....or is that the same?
would really appreciate your input.
fyi - my clicking sound goes away after 3 minutes of starting in the am as soon as the engine temperature gets above 80 deg C.

wow! i use 10-40 year around since i bought the car new never had a problem till this day so this just proves that changing viscosity of oil from season to season it POINTLESS! unlees u live in extreme weather.. alaska winters and sahara summers
