1992 300E Code Reading
How do I read diagnostic codes on this '92 300E (2.6 engine)? I see some of the threads referring to reading codes, but not sure how to do it on this pre-OBDII car. It is not a California version (even though the car lives in California now, it did not originally). I also cannot see the Check Engine light location in the cluster...most cars will light this up when the car starts up to make sure the light works, but I do not even see a location where this light might be in my instrument cluster. Did this model not have a check engine light? Thanks for your help!!

Still wondering why i cannot locate the Check Engine light....did this model not have one because it was not a California model, or did all '92 models have a Check Engine light and I just cannot see it?

1992 300e 2.6
Hmmm I have a 92 with a 2.6 and I get a check engine light on the bottom right corner of my dash. even when its not on you can see the white text displayed in the little square. odd.. I know that light very well because my EGR is bad so it goes on all the time so I just clear the code. you can check the code by popping the hood the diagnostic unit thigie should be right next to the battery on the passenger side under a little cap. if you press the button for about 5 seconds it will start to blink. count the blinks.. there is a guide HERE that will tell you what the blinks mean. I get the same old 16 blinks every time X_X... to clear the code if you are sure u know what it is just hold down for 8 seconds or so and it will light up one solid light and the code will clear.. and for the check engine light... Ive never seen a car without an idiot light

Looking in my manual it says the Check Engine light is only on the California model (for 1992). That makes sense, then, since mine was not a California model. I just wonder how a person would know if they have a diagnostic code or error without a light?

Have you checked the links in the thread I linked above?
Go to Post #8 and open (download) the link.
According to that publication, your non-California 124.026 model should have a 16-pin diagnostic connector, which is probably in front of the battery, and has a lid on it. Pages 11, 24, 25, and 28 have the information you need. The rest of the thread should have everything you need to read codes.
I can't imagine that your car has the diagnostics, but no warning light on the dash. What does your owners manual say?

Owner's manual says Check Engine light only on California models (and I do not have the Check Engine light panel). I do have the diagnostic connector next to the battery. The manual says the Califormia models also have the switch and LED light on the diagnostic connector (as is mentioned above by a guy from Sacramento on his '92) - mine does not have these since not a California model. It does seem strange to have a connection for the diagnostics but no dashboard light. How would you know if you need to check it? Maybe it was something they figured only the MB shop would use on these non-California models and no need to set off a light for an emissions issue if you don't live in CA.
