Mercedez Benz E320 Coupe
instrumentation panel lights

Anyone know how to fix the instrumentation lights for a 94 E320 Coupe? Lights went out on all the lights inside the dashboard, radio and button lights. I checked all the fuse on the engine bay, everything seems ok. Is there another fusebox for the lighting? Let me know.

There is a black rectangular lighting control module, under the left side of the hood, by the fuse panel. These frequently become corroded or need to be re-soldered.

Make sure your dimming rheostat is turned to the right...
Sometimes when you reset the trip mileage the knob is inadvertenly turned to the left, extinguishing the lights you say are no longer working

Be careful also when the rheostat becomes worn. Mine takes some fiddling to get it to make contact so the lights work. I really need to look into replacing it speaking of.

94 E280, 116,000k, Almandine Red, Mushroom MB Tex, Ugly Alloys that came with car
Replaced the headunit in my E280 yesterday. Then last night when I turned on the headlights, no instrument lights (or any others controlled by the dimmer). Fuses all OK. Took H/U out this morning and re-checked wiring, but all seems OK. Thinking I could have pull a plug out from somewhere, but seems unlikely. Used to fit car audio years ago so realise that could be conincidental.

How involved is replacing the dimmer switch?

My 95 E320 was in my shop for 1.5 years until I finally replaced the transmission. When I was rolling at last, the instrumentation lights would not illuminate. I turned the left dash "rheostat" knob without success but then "fiddled with it" and they came on!! Literally, I ended up moving the knob up and down while turning it and they came on and were adjustable. I would like to thank everyone for this thread and forum....it has saved me hundreds of hours of frustration.
P.S. - My 15 year old daughter never acknowledges the quality of the "Benz" until the other day when I gave her a ride home from the bus stop and she suddenly noticed " wow this care really rides smooth".... there is hope ;-)

Glad the fiddle with it tip worked for you I know it sounds stupid, but there really is no other way to describe it other than fiddle with the damned thing till it makes contact again.

Let'er have it when she's ready. You can't ask for a safer, more predictable car to start learning on.
