89' Mercedes Benz 300te
wagon suspension question
i have an 89' 300te with what i have been told, a hydro style suspension.it has a box next to the abs system that says hydro fluid.my shocks have lines running to them.i am having problems with this system, the cars wonders at speed and really rough on bumps.a hissing sound is coming from the right rear of the car by the tire.my question is...can i convert it to a standard style shock all around?

It is Self-Leveling Suspension -- SLS.
I remember reading a thread over at the mercedesshop.com forums about swapping them out. If you do a search you might find something.
The wondering at speed is most likely the rear control arms as the bushings get worn and broken -- unfortunately requiring the entire arm to be replaced as the bushings are welded/molded on. Easiest way to check it is to have someone drive the car forward from a stop...if you see the rear wheels move back slightly instead of staying locked in the middle as they should then that's the problem.
