Unhappy rear diff or tranny? please help

ok so heres my problem. since i bought my 300ce it has always shifted rough on occasion with a clunk comming from the rear wtih each shift. then the other day as im driving home from the library my car keeps slipping out of fourth and back into third. then the next night i completely lose 4th gear and my car reverts itself into second gear. occasionally it will go into third and will remain in gear as long as i am giving it gas but as soon as i break it slips back into second and gets stuck in second almost completely except for the odd **** into third. when this sudden change occured my speedometer suddenly stopped working. this has never happened before. park, reverse, neutral gears all seem to be working fine. i checked the tranny fluid and it seems good. the clunks when shifting all come from the rear of the car and the noise from the back end is quite loud. last night i jacked the rear end of the car up in he air and put the car in "drive". i spun the right wheel first by hand and found that the left wheels was also spinning in the opposite direction. but whne i tried spinning the left wheel it was totally free spnning and had no effect on the right wheel. does this mean that my rear diff is shot? or is this a transmission issue? my car still drives in second, goes into third rarely, and 4th is out of the question. all the other gears work. all the sounds seem to be comming from the rear end and my speedo suddenly doesnt work. I was told that when the rear diff goes the speedo will often go as well on my car. its a 300ce 1988 w124 coupe

Same thing happened in my wife 94 e320. A tranny shop flushed the trans and cleaned out the accumulators. Worked better, but was told it would need a rebuild.

Have the same problem regarding the "thunk" in the back of the car. Curious to see what you come up with...

Accumulators as in part of the rear suspension, or something else?

Same issue here, the clunk and slipping. I just had my transmisson fluid and filter changed and it seems to be better for now, but I was recommended a rebuild too. We tore open my filter and there was a bunch of crap in there.

I was told by the transmission guy that a flush is not recommended unless the transmission fluid has been changed quite often. He said that a flush on a high mileage car that rarely had the tranmission fluid changed could actually lead to more harm than good.

I bought this car in December and noticed it also has some shifting issues (sometimes rough shift clunk etc).

Nevertheless I opted to go camping, 2 hours into my drive when I started having to deal with constant steep hills it started slipping. I put it in neutral and it would go back but I didnt wanna chance it so I turned around and went back home.

It started failing to go into 4th so I was limited to 80kms. I would pull over and accelerate from 0kms (not hard acceleration) and then it would behave. My mechanic says its probably the valuvle body dirty and sticky. A rebuild is always nice but dropping the valve body is much easier to drop and clean.

I agree a flush on an old dirty system could muck up the valve body so I am probably going to drop the valve body and clean it as flushes cant do a 100% clean job.

ok so i just went into the shop this morning. the mechanic initially insisted that i was probably going to need a new transmission or transmission rebuild. after about 20 minutes with the car he came in and was adament that it was a B2 failure in my tranny. overall parts and labour he said that the job was going to cost me around 300 which seems fair. i have read a little bit on this issue and it doesnt require tranny removal which is definetly a bonus. i got into law school over in the uk and i basically just need this car to last me until sept. does anyone on here have any experience with the B2 failure? am i merely just delaying the innevitable with this fix?
