New Toys For My 500E

I just got some new mods for my 500E, thought I'd show the members.

I bought an MB CLK mirror from 2phast with Homelink and Autodim.

The mirror is modified with a W124 stalk to fit my car.

Rik's pictures are better than mine - check the link:

http://www.500eboard.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=416

Just for fun, I got an MB, Europe only, optional halon fire extinguisher that mounts to the front of the driver's seat.

Almost impossible to get in North America, I won't be using it to put out any burning Civics!

Yes, shame on me but they are cool mods

Sean elected to get the OE MB mirror (last one built) and I have since switched over to using this one only. It more closely resembles the OE W124 mirror (stalk mounts from the rear), plus it has a internal compass and less problems with the Homelink.

It is more complicated to build but the end result is worth it.

WTH kinda mirror is that?! Ive wanted a upgraded one for a while, but none of the newer style ones look right to me. Ive had an extra w202 mirror for a while but decided not to put it in.

I am liking the mirror and the compass. Where did this magic come from? And why is the LCD lit blue? That seems against Merc's interior color scheme..

This mirror is made by the same company that made the original W124 auto dimming mirror, but this particular mirror is not from a MB, no MB I have seen has a compass in the mirror. I build these, so I guess the "magic" comes from me

Yes, the compass illumination is blue and no, the color can not be changed or the compass turned off. Although I could modify the mirror with a on/off switch to turn the compass off, but to date, I have not found a suitable switch for this purpose. When the mirror dims, the compass illumination dims as well

The mirror uses the factory W124/W201 stalk (I also build these for the W126, which uses a different stalk) and all of the connection wires are routed internal to the stalk. Easy two wire hookup.

I wouldn't recommend this mirror for anyone around 6' in height, it does not have the same level of adjustability as the OE mirror, so if your OE mirror is maxed out at any verticle angle thats a good sign this may not be for you.

These sell for $150 plus shipping. But I have more orders then I can fill right now, the W124.036 owners have kept me busy, so I haven't offered them on any of the other forums yet.

OMG....if you really are complaining about the LED color wow.....

Just mask off that little portion and buy translucent model paint in orange to change the color...

Thanks Riv

I love it that a fairly conservative firm like MB would offer this outrageous option on a 4 door luxury sedan sleeper.

In the cabin, no less!

Are you serious? I will complain. Its the same reason I don't have some POS Pioneer or other headunit in my car. It will look retarded. There is a definite scheme of colors MB uses for illumination and NiteGlo is NOT one of those colors. I know I could de-solder the LEDs and replace with yellow/orange ones but that is a ton of work. To be honest, I feel like that mirror will look out of place and on my small budget, I can't afford to just throw something in the car if I am not 100% sure it is right. If the colors were right, I'd have no hesitation. Maybe I'll get it and use it to improve my micro-solder skills. I do have an x360 I need to fix as well...

Hmm, well many cars that use red and amber illumination have mirrors of this type (blue compasss and/or temp displays). Highly unlikely you will locate a suitable amber display to use in this mirror, its not just a couple of LED's that would need to be replaced either. All of these displays are blue and are used for compass and temp display (on other mirrors). As for soldering skills, these have micro solder joints, probably done by machine, nothing I will even attempt to work on.

I know. I was not complaining to you :P I know it is damn near impossible, but I've seen people change the stock LED illumination on things like G35s and Scion TCs and stuff. A crazy amount of work, but doable. I will add this to my mod thread for later.

Thanks again Rik

That's what I was posting about. Pretty lame complaining about LED color when you could change it as per my suggestion.

Think outside the box!

Now on to the w126. The height you are talking about how does that work into the use on a w126? Cause I want 2 of these puppies one for an 89 SEL and 1 for a 91 SEC.
I think I have tried to contact you through benzworld also.

The W126 uses a different stalk. I have one W126 stalk in stock, but I would need the mirror pre-paid before I start building one specific for the W126.

You can PM me for payment information.
