Worth the buy: 91 300TE 86k miles with 4matic light on
I know nothing about MBs, but I love this car. They are asking 4000 for it, low miles, drives well. I just dont know what the 4matic light being on means exactly. I read here that it is in 2 wheel drive mode, but part of the reason that I want this car is for its awd. Historically, is it an expensive fix? And should I consider buying this car? (It is beautiful, one owner, great interior, engine looks good, etc.) I am just worried about the 4matic.

For $4000, no. $3000 if everything else is in working order. If the 4matic was working and everything else is close to perfect, it would be worth $4k.
The 4matic as I understand can be very expensive to fix. I would get an estimate on how much to fix it and then factor that into the buying purchase. You can run w/o it for a while until you decide to fix it.

As ps2cho said, expensive to fix. There is a modulator or valve in the transfer case that fails and spews hydraulic fluid which blows seals. Transfer case has to come out and apart, and requires special tools to repair it. Multi-thousand dollar repair. And very few used cases around, and they should be considered suspect as well.
