No reverse - transmission problem

Great info. My reverse went out 2 yrs ago. Everything else works fine. If I have a slight movement when going into reverse it will slowly take hold and no acceleration will back me up on level surface. 240k on trans. Do you recommend a rebuilt torque converter or rebuild the original teans and converter

oh..thoughts on my sunroof it raised up but will not go down. I hear the motor in up/down position but no movement. Is there a manual way to get it closed. Rain tomorrow. Bob

Out Of Control!!
Hopefully you have the hex emergency key(tool) to close the roof--the socket is behind the overhead control panel!!---however if you went two years without a reverse who GAS about a little water---just keep the doors ajar!!

sunroof problem
Ha! Thanks so much. I'll locate the hex key and get after the sunroof problem. I have another trans lined up so when this one goes I'll replace.

Mercedes 1995 S-350 Turbo Diesel
Dear Zach:
Don't know if you are still wrenching on Mercedes but I am really stumped! I have an S-350 turbo diesel 1995. The trans is supposed to have a 13 pin connector as the factory installed 722.4 The electrical connector on this trans is a 90 degree 4-pin that has a nylon locking collar to remove it. I cleaned the oil off of it with brake cleaner and reinstalled it. The trans is in limp mode with no reverse. What kind of trans do I have? This S-350 was built 6-1995 Thanks! mgdoc

tranny shop you can trust
The tranny in my car has a failing reverse - all the rest is great. My MB mechanic, Bernie at MB Euromotors (604-874-0744), says he has guy who does an excellent job at rebuilding these trannys. Approx cost: $2500 - not sure if that includes the re & re.
Apparently, it is not possible/very unadvisable, to just repair Reverse. Better to rebuild entirely. I have heard this from several sources.
Whatever you do, don't buy a dealer MB Rebuilt tranny.
I think you should stay with an MB specialist. However, you could try Bert's on Kingsway, if they are still there.
Do NOT go to Alltrans on Kingsway. I went there a few years ago and the guy was a classic ripoff artist - absolutely disgraceful, no conscience, no ethics.

This is a common problem with w126 transmissions. The pump that supplies the pressure for the reverse section goes bad. As I remember it can be repaired with transmission in the car. It can be located by looking for a round shaped cover on the side and towards rear of tranny. The reply from ZAX 126 is spot on. follow his direction on this.

My car all of a sudden doesn't want to go into reverse. That is what I found out after driving it for an hour. And 1/2 hour later, started it up and it wouldn't go into reverse.
I noticed that when I first start it up it goes into reverse no problem. But if I drive for say 20 minutes, it won't go into reverse unless I rev it up to about 1500K.
The rest of the transmission is fine. It shift good and smoothly. I got about 240K. I always did the transmission fluid changes on time.
SO I went to a transmission shop, and they said maybe the seal. They say you have to open it up, and while you do that you should do a complete overhaul and change the torque converter. The cost $2700 !!! And if it need other parts, like gears then extra.
So any recommendations. As funds are tight now, I would rather just fix the reverse problem. I just don't think it is worth paying $3000+ for a complete overhaul.
What should a reverse fix only problem cost? How many hours - I assume it is just a seal or piston that has gone bad.
Any suggestions? Anyone know a good transmission shop in Greater Vancouver that will do it for a good price?

I HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WITH A 1996 S500 W140, ALL FORWARD GEARS WORKED [PERFECTLY BUT NO REVERSE OPERATION. YOUR TRANSMISSION MAY HAVE SIMILAR DESIGN. THE GOING INTO GEAR AT HIGHER RPM'S INDICATES LOW PRESSURE IN THE REVERSE PUMP ASSEMBLY. AS I REMEBER THIS SEPERATE PUMP/CONTROL ASSEMBLY IS LOCATED ON THE REAR AND DRIVERS SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND RECOGNIZED BY ITS BEING A 4-5 " ROUND SHAPE. IF I MA CORRECT THEN THIS SECTION CAN BE REPAIRED WHILE IN THE CAR AT A MUCH LOWER COST THAN TOTAL REBUILD. IF YOU HAVE MAINTAINED TRANSMISSION THEN AND I AM CORRECT ALL YOU HAV ETO DO IS FIND A REPUTABLE SHOP THAT WILL DO THIS REPAIR. RESEARCH TO SEE IF I AM CORRECT. IF I AM MISTAKEN THEN NOTHING LOST, BUT IF CORRECT THEN I GET A GOLD STAR. GOD LUCK CHEERS PAUL W

I FORGOT TO MENTION. THERE IS A GUY IN THE SAN FERNANDO AREA OF LOS ANGELES WHO REBUILDS MBZ ONLY TRANSMISSIONS. HE IS THE BEST THERE IS AND RESAONABLE COST MAKING IT WORTH THE SHIPPING COST TO AND RETURN OF ALD TRANSMISSION CORE. I DONT HAVE THE NUMBER BUT CALL WHITE OAK MERCEDES IN ENCINE CA. AND TALK TO MIKE. HE CAN GET YOU THE INFO. CHEERS PAUL
