hey guys i need some help here! today one of my girlfriends was driving my old 88 260e to college and the sun roof opened half way and now won't move---but i think i still hear the motor going and i got some type of clicking sounds-- i would like to fix it before it rains---can someone help me with this? thanx

Make sure the motor is still connected to the roof. You can take a peek under the sunroof. I'm having mine fixed at my mechanic on Friday. "One of your girlfriends" was driving your 260e? How many do you have?

It's one of four things..
1) Metal clip inside the sunroof is broken
2) Steel cable has snapped
3) Electric motor gears have sheered
4) All of the above! (more likely if you keep pressing the button!)
Take the sunroof trim off inside the car. You'll be able to see the clip attached to the cable. Remove the trim from the boot (trunk) on the electric aerial side. This is where the motor is. From here you can remove the cable and the motor.
Good luck

MBWorld Fanatic!
If just need to close it before it rains, open the small lid in the trunk (driver side) you will find a hex nut and you need a wrench to manually close the roof.

Sun-roof extra fragile?
Are these things super fragile or am I just unlucky???
I've had the roof stop working on my last two MB's (a 1986 300SE and now a 1990 300E)...
I was quoted $1300+ to fix the roof on the SE, and the car was written off before I had the work done.
Now I just picked up a low-mileage 300E, and the roof stops working after 3 weeks!
They've replaced the cable already but are telling me that the metal tube the cable sits in is split, and must be replaced - about 15 hours work!!
